Be Careful!

I wanted to post this now, since this is the time of year when a lot of us will begin thinking about what to do for vacation next year, and possibly even booking a location. I put it on this forum because there are so many cabins and chalets for rent in Tennessee, particularly in the Smoky Mountain area.

My message is: Be VERY, VERY careful when you book a location. I speak from experience. Back in 1992, long before the internet made these things so much easier, I saw an ad in a national travel magazine advertising cabins in the Smokies. The price seemed too good to be true-red flag number one! I called the owner, a woman who lived in Knoxville, and she proceeded to tell me a long string of lies about the cabin, at which point I stupidly booked it. Well, suffice it to say that when we arrived at the cabin months later, it was a nightmare! Slugs in the shower, bugs in the toaster, 1960%26#39;s paneling on all of the walls, terrible beds, and black smudges around all of the antiquated electrical outlets. It was virtually uninhabitable, mainly because we were concerned about our kids%26#39; safety with the electrical system being so outdated. We called the owner and tried to explain to her in a rational way that the cabin was nothing at all as she had described it and that, furthermore, there was no way that it would ever pass any type of electrical safety inspection, at which point she swore at us and hung up. We packed up and went to a nice hotel, and we and the other people with whom we were traveling each lost $200.00.

Here are my tips so that the same thing doesn%26#39;t happen to you. Hopefully you are smart enough not to need them, but here they are, just in case:

1.) NEVER rent a place sight unseeen. Nowadays with the internet available to all of us, there is no excuse not to request pictures of the exact unit that you will be renting, and STAY AWAY if the owner refuses or gives you some lame excuse, such as not having the internet, etc. Even though my nightmare happened back in 1992, I should have still requested that the owner supply me with pictures. That way, you have proof if the unit you get and the pictures do not match.

2.) Be very wary of cheap prices. That is how I was sucked in. If it is cheap, there is a reason why. The only way that I will book a very below-market price now is with one of the online discount travel services such as Priceline, Hotwire, etc. because they stand behind the places that they book for you and will only book places that are up to their standards. We have used both of these services extensively, and we have never been burned once.

3.) If you do make a mistake like I did, and you find something terribly wrong such as black smudges around all of the electrical outlets, mold on the ceilings, etc. REPORT it to the county health department or other appropriate authorities. Maybe you will get out without having a fire, but the next people might not be so lucky.

I know that the vast majority of resort property owners in the Smokies as well as in other areas are decent, honest people who deliver what they promise, and we have been back to the area three times since our unfortunate incident and had a wonderful experience each time. I just don%26#39;t want any of you to get burned like we did. We all work hard and deserve a wonderful vacation, and I wish that for each and every one of you.

Info. on Brothers cove in Pigeon Forge and any on info. on...

ANY INFO. would be very helpful from anyone who is from or has visited Tenn. area. My family and I will be there in late Jan. 05%26#39; and would like to stay in a cabin as high up in the mountains as we can posssibly get. Any ideas????? And for the big question WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF US GETTING SOME SNOW ???I am looking at cabins from '; Brothers Cove'; any reviews????What is some must see and do things in the area? We are not skiers but would love to sled ride. Plans so far put us in Gatlinburg, but that can chage with what I read on here.lol.

Thanks for any and all help...

My family and I go once or twice each year to the Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge area. We usually rent a cabin through jackson mountain homes, a rental company. They are professional and rent very nice privately owned cabin/chalets. If you call them and tell them what you are looking for they will try to help you without trying to put you in just anything to get your cash. They have a really strong business volume already.

While we almost always stay with that agency, we have been looking at Brothers Cove too for a couple of years. We are not the types to deviate from the norm so we have not taken that plunge yet. The thing I don%26#39;t like about brothers cove is it looks like an owner operator property. Mom and Pop can be a pleasant experience but it can also be a bad one. Just not too sure but I would love to hear your experience if you do stay with them.

As for the snow, I wouldnt hold my breath. You do have some elevation in Gatlinburg but not much. And it is a bit South. Snow is possible but not real common in Gatlinburg in my experience. The Ski resort is small and they will probably have sleigh riding of sorts but the resorts elevation is significantly higher that downtown Gatliburg. When I was there this summer, they had sleigh like carts that you could ride down a long concrete runway. I would assume that they take the wheels off of them in the Winter and have a blast.

If youre more interetes in the scenery and atmosphere of the ';mountains'; find a newly built cabin. If you want nice accomodations that arein the heart of the shopping / attraction district check out the resort at Governors Crossing. We rented a condo there once this year and it was gorgeous.

Good Luck

Be careful what you wish for....we just got back from a mountain (not one of the big ones, though!) cabin and can%26#39;t imagine having to drive to/from it in the snow or ice. Chances probably aren%26#39;t great that you would get snow there but you would need 4WD and/or snow chains if you did. It was beautiful though and I can%26#39;t imagine NOT staying in a mountain cabin. Went through cabinfevervacations.com. They are a reservation company for private owners, I believe, and have a ton of cabins/locations/amenities to choose from. Enjoy your stay....we WILL be going back!

Hi Treasure Coast,

It%26#39;s very hard to predict if you will have any snow at that time. But I was just in Pigeon Forge for Christmas, and my siblings and I looked at Brothers Cove for investment cabins, and the ones at the very top have spectacular views. There%26#39;s hardly a structure of any kind in sight. Their web site does say that if there is snow, your car will need chains. Having lived in Florida, I dare say that you even have an ice scraper for the windshield let alone chains. I am originally from East Tennessee, and my family never owned chains for our cars, but the elevation of these cabins would make for tricky maneuvering especially if you should experience icy rain or snow. I was very impressed with the cabins at the top of the mountain that are under construction because many of them have wrap around windows that afford unobstructed views and make it seem like you%26#39;re suspended in air.

There are several other developments that have spectacular views, e.g. Starr Crest Resorts and Timber Tops. The road up to Timber Tops can be frightening even for those of us that grew up here. It is narrow, winding, and steep. The road to Starr Crest is less narrow but still very steep. I think that if you were in a cabin at either of these developments when it snowed, you would be stuck. It would be dangerous to try to use a sled at such heights.

Ober Gatlinburg is the ski center, and our waiter at one of the restaurants that we ate at last week said that in addition to skiing there, you can snowboard and rent everything you need except sunglasses.

The chalets in Gatlinburg do have good views, but again the roads can be dangerous, and this area has accomodations that can be 20 - 40 years older than cabins in Pigeon Forge. Gatlinburg is reminiscent of a Bavarian Village and is very conducive to strolling among the shops. You will notice that there are many fudge shops and pancake shops. Try Aunt Mahalia%26#39;s for fudge and Flapjacks for pancakes.

Pigeon Forge has really exploded since I was a child. The centerpiece is Dollywood, an amusement park owned in part by Dolly Parton. I haven%26#39;t been there, but it will be closed anyway when you are there. There are lots of show venues by people like Louise Mandrell and then lesser known people. I have heard that the Black Bear Revue is good if you are with a wide age range of people. The outlet malls are very new for the most part and have a nice selection. If you stay in Pigeon Forge you can use their new community center for $5 per day and bowl, use the gym, or swim indoors. The parkway through Pigeon Forge is a wide, four lane road, and the road through Gatlinburg is just 2 lanes in some places. There is a community in Gatlinburg called Arts and Crafts that has many artists working on site. There%26#39;s a very good chance that it won%26#39;t be too cold for outside activities like putt-putt golf and go cart racing. I%26#39;m not sure if they close for part of the winter. But, for me, being in a cabin in the cold months is the best because the hot tub is so much nicer when the air around you is cold. Also all the traffic congestion of the summer months and Christmas is gone too.

I hope you won%26#39;t think I am responding to you just because I own a rental cabin with my family, but I just thought I would mention it. We just stayed there for 2 weeks during Christmas, and it was so relaxing. It is not yet a year old. It has three levels with a bedroom and bathroom on each level. The kitchen has a stove, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, blender, popcorn popper, hand mixer, dishwasher, etc. Each bed is queen sized with a pillow top mattress with an extra thick mattress pad. The downstairs gameroom has a regulation size pool table, wet bar, darts, board games, and the deck on this level has the 5 person hot tub. It is not high up on a mountain top, but it is less than a mile from the parkway in Pigeon Forge and has a lot of trees around it. The hill just in front of it has heating elements under the road to melt any ice should there be any. The web site for the rental agency that handles the bookings is Baskins Creek Vacations.

Hope you and your family enjoy yourselves. You might want to consider a day trip to Asheville, N.C. to tour Biltmore House if you have the time. Asheville has a lot of contemporary craft galleries, and the most famous is the award winning New Morning Gallery.

Directed to Tangerine LuLu and anyone else:

I took a look-see at Boulder Bear and it is indeed an awesome cabin. My husband and I love the Smokies and we have thought seriously about buying a place and putting it on the rental program. We have always loved the Highland Condominiums because of the view (national park and gatlinburg city, but we want something with our own hot tub, mountain/city views, etc. Do you have any suggestions. Also, can you actually come close to breaking even financially?

Thanks.

if you want like an overview of the weather in the area, for example, snow and whatnot, ask a local.

Black Bear Restaurant

Does anyone know what happened to the Black Bear Restaurant? I visited Gatlinburg in June 2004 and I noticed that it was no longer there.

JPR

The Black Bear Restaurant burn down probably three years ago. They build some kind of a pancake house in it%26#39;s place--Flap Jack%26#39;s or something like that.

it burnt down.

Any recommendations for Cabins/Chalets in Gatlinburg?

Ok, I have read a lot of opinions on this trip advisor. I am a little confused. Five people will like a cabin/chalet company and then there will be one or two horror stories...

We love the mountains and this would be our first trip to Tennessee. We want something reallyn nice, and clean. We are planning on driving from Tampa, Floida with our kids 11 %26amp; 16 for a long weekend maybe before Thanksgiving Some of these pictures of cabins have absolutely breathtaking views with windows from floor to ceiling. That is what we are looking for with a hot tub too.

Please help....all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Any recommendations for Cabins/Chalets in Gatlinburg?

I am not really sure why there are so many varied reports within the same rental company.

Timber Tops just had a review based on it not being clean and bad customer service but a few months ago another poster had only wonderful reviews.

Maybe some of the problem getting different reviews on dif. rental companies may be based on the fact that they offer hundreds of properties and you can get something brand new (as we did) or the property may have been built in the 70%26#39;s and not have been updated.

We rented through Jackson Mountain Homes and ours was brand new as of June. So, the cabin was represented exactly as it was. It was even better...that one would be too big for you since it was a 4 bedroom. But, it was gorgeous with a wonderful view to go with it.

They do have some new smaller cabins that are new, too. I would rent from them again.

Lots of cabins are being constantly updated.

My daughter has stayed in two older cabins through a different rental company that were beautiful..they were two bedroom cabins.

I would assume you are looking for a three bedroom. (??)

I just sent gburggal an email to view their cabins.

Hi

I wish I could give you more info. about the ';Preserve Resort';

We%26#39;re going around the same time so it will be to late for my ';review'; when we get back. We booked it just from the website, which is a little scary since nobody seems to know anything about it! At this point I really dont care I just want to go somewhere they dont have hurricanes!!!!

Good luck to you with ';Wilma';

Are you going to drive straight to Gatlinburg or do you plan on stopping? if so, any recommenations?

GG66 You are only 9 1/2 to 10 hrs from gatlinburg. easy drive 95 to 26 to 40 and then 321 down to gatlinburg. we have made the drive from oviedo several times. I have been through atlanta and cherokee to gatlinburg also through atlanta to chattanooga to gatlinburg nothing quicker than 95. enjoy you trip.

We rented ';Back To Nature'; through Jackson Mountain Homes and the cabin was just beautiful. Almost as nice as the view. My 20 something kids all said the cabin itself was worth the drive from Florida.

Try Majestic Mountain Vacations, most of their cabins are new. I see the posting police are out again, I hope this post makes it.

Thank you all for your great information. I really appreciate it.

Does anyone know anything more about the ';Preserve Resort';?

Live Music, New Year's Eve

I have some friends coming to Gatlinburg for New Year%26#39;s Eve. They have asked me where they could hear live music, country or rock. We live in Knoxville and really don%26#39;t get up as much as we should, so we need help.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

TENNVOL

Live Music, New Year's Eve

They have live music at the Smoky Mountain Brewery and I have heard that the Aquarium has a great New Years Eve Celebration ( I think they have live music too, but not sure)

Live Music, New Year's Eve

Laurel Springs, thanks for the info.

Someone has said there is a country and western club/bar on the parkway. If you know the name I would appreciate it.

thanks.

that might be THE PARTY HUT - across from the HardRock cafe

The aquarium has a big party with cash bars, live music, food, dancing, etc.. It%26#39;s $99/couple. Blaine%26#39;s has a big party as well, $25-$75 per person.

Local country artists playing on/near broadway

We%26#39;re coming down next Wed and Thurs and are looking for a recommendation of where to hang out and hear current and classic country music by a good artist. We have been a few times and find ourselves wandering looking for someone good. Does anyone know where we are sure to have some luck?

Local country artists playing on/near broadway

If I were you, I would just walk down Broadway and hit anything w/an open door. You have Tootsies, Roberts Western Wear (yes, they have live music), and so on down the street. In my younger days, we used to call it a pub crawl, but you do get to hear a lot of great, local, live music.

  • Getting to Graceland?

How can I get to Graceland from say Gatlingburg area without driving?

I would prefer not to drive because it looks like it would be a long drive and I don%26#39;t really want to stay overnight although I guess I could but we are going to rent a cabin unless we just leave early from the cabin and drive down to Memphis and stay and then back to the airport or something.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Getting to Graceland?

    fly?

    Getting to Graceland?

Unless you want a really long bus ride, only direct flight would be Knoxville/Memphis on Northwest Airlines. Most other airlines offer connections between those 2 cities. No train service available.

    Dollywood discounts

Does anyone know if there are discounts available for Dollywood 1 day passes? Thanks

    Dollywood discounts

if you are a military person they have good rates and also some of the hotels are offering discount rates....check with the park tower inn 1-800-453-8605...nice room large....but don%26#39;t stay in the family suite on the bottom floor...too noisy being next to an exit door....hopes this helps.....

    Dollywood discounts

Only one I can think of is AAA. If you go during the summer, if you go into the park after 3p, you get in the next day, all day, for free.

I just returned from dollywood friday...i just remembered something....it was rainy...when i was there on that thursday...really not bad at all....that kept the crowd down at the park...a woman said she was from out of town and that she was given a complimentary pass for the next day because of the rain....friday was going to be sunny.....

    Singers visiting Nashville

Our college A capella group is touring through Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee and we%26#39;re wondering if there were any venues in Nashville where we could sing when we%26#39;ll be there (January 13th and 14th, 2006). We sing a wide variety of music ranging from pop to jazz and appeal to diverse audiences. (We have sung at events ranging from informal gigs for fellow college students to singing at the White House for Christmas parties.) Thanks!

Hi, You might check with the Bluebird Cafe or the Country Music Hall of Fame, also we have Oprymills, Cool Springs Galleria and Rivergate malls that have large courtyards.

They all have .com web addresses.

    Hotel suggestions needed

    Hotel suggestions needed

Hilton Suites is nice. It is the one on 4th Ave. downtown, right next to the new Country Music Hall of Fame and a block or so from the Ryman Auditorium. Easy walk to 2nd Ave...

Sorry, don%26#39;t know why it double posted...!!

We like the Sheraton Nashville Downtown, it%26#39;s across the street from the State Capitol. We walked to 2nd Avenue, where all the action is (if the weather is nice). But, if it isn%26#39;t the cab ride there is around $5. I did see tour buses at the hotel, so I assume tours depart from there, but you may want to check around. Not sure how much cash you plan to spend on this trip, but the highest rated hotel in trip advisor for Nashville is The Hermitage. It is a couple buildings down from The Sheraton so we have seen the outside of it, but not actually stayed there. Also, if your inlaws like Italian food, check out the Old Spaghetti Factory in downtown on 2nd Ave (I think.) We walked there from the hotel and it is inexpensive and great food.

You can schedule tours to pick you up at most of the downtown hotels. Tour companies like Nashville Sightseeing have you indicate your hotel when you reserve your spot on the tour. My mom stayed at the Sheraton this weekend, and it%26#39;s nice. The Hilton is also very nice.

The downtown Hilton is right in the heart of downtown and an excellent hotel, I stayed

there in August.(we walked everywhere except

for a cab ride to the Opryland Hotel)I have also heard good reviews on the Renaissance which is also in the same part town.

Hilton Suites Downtown, Marriott Courtyard, Renaissance Nashville Hotel (Marriott), Doubletree Hotel are all very nice hotels and close to everything Downtown within walking distance. I have stayed at all except for the Courtyard, can%26#39;t go wrong with any of them. As for access to/from interstates, Hilton %26amp; Marriott would be your best bets.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your stay.

i would stay at the downtown sheraton or renassiance because they are high rise hotels with a beautiful view. Try to get a room facing north and you can see the state capitol and a state park.

    Clean and inexpensive

Could any of you recommend a clean (and i mean REALLY clean)hotel with an indoor pool in Pigeon Forge close to Dollywood and the Dixie Stampede. We would like something for less than 100 per night. We would like to go next summer. Interior corridors would be nice also as we are traveling along, a single mom and daughter.

    Clean and inexpensive

The Mainstay Suites is very nice and clean. Indoor and outdoor pool. Full kitchen in rooms, save on food. Breakfast is great. I stayed there 2 years ago. Not sure on rate in summer, we went in November. Check out their website.

    Clean and inexpensive

Checck out Country Inn and Suites. Our room was less than $50. They have a nice breakfast biscuit and gravy, several kinds of cereal, instant oatmeal and grits. They also have a nice large indoor pool. IT is a great place to stay. Just off the Parkway infront of the Comedy Barn. You can get to it from Wear%26#39;s Valley road also.

We stayed at Park Tower in Pigeon Forge. Great price, indoor pool with lazy river.

Clean, nice staff just off the parkway, quiet. I did a lot of research and plan on trying the Riverside Towers next time. But I have stayed at Park Tower and its great.

stay Suites are VERY nice...and expensive in the summer. I think prime rates for most motels/hotels start end of June/beginning of July. We%26#39;ve stayed at the Best Western Toni the last two years, most are exterior corridor (unless you get a room in the indoor pool area). We%26#39;ve always been happy there and I believe with our AAA discount it is under $100/night (week of July 4th). Dixie Stampede is right across the street.

OOps, I meant MAINstay Suites in my previous post!

Two thumbs and eight fingers up for Comfort Inn Apple Valley. Best motel we%26#39;ve ever stayed in. They have indoor and outdoor pools, interior corridors, free breakfast each morning (not very good, but what free breakfasts are?), and very clean and friendly.

It isn%26#39;t near Dollywood or Dixie Stampede however. It%26#39;s right on the edge of Sevierville and Pigeon Forge.

james manor is the place to stay. under 75 a night. great indoor pool, friendly staff.

the www.econolodge-pigeonforge.com is a great place to stay...real clean and great indoor pool...stay there all the time....right now you can go on their web site and get a room for 29.95 if you call them it is 49.95....the front desk staff might not be much but the breakfast room staff makes up for them.....

We have stayed several times Park Grove Inn behind Red Roof Inn--just off the parkway. Near all the places you named, inexpensive, VERY clean, interior corridors, indoor pool, free continental breakfast, nice lobby area with fireplace and couches and coffee 24 hours a day, someones always at the front desk---safe and nice!! I think you would be pleased!!

    rhythm and brews

Do you know of any inexpensive motels near here please?

    rhythm and brews

Well not really most of the hotels there are kinda high due to Rythem and Brews being right next to the aquarium, lots of tourists right there. Look into staying near an interstate or near hamtilton place. Its further but if you stay near the place youll eitehr be in a run down hotel or an expensive one.

    rhythm and brews

Thanks Chasm...the rundown mention intrigues me, can you furnish a name(s) please? Thanks.

Days Inn Rivergate downtown is inexpensive (appr. $65) and convenient to everything.

cg? is that hotel right next to city cafe?

It%26#39;s on Carter Street. Just down (toward the aquarium) from the Trade Center. I%26#39;m not sure where the City Cafe is.

I think it is the same place, Its a older hotel but looks alright from the outside. I have never been inside. If the inside is ok then it would be a great place to stay!

Thanks folks, Days Inn noted. No real fleabags/lunatic fringe motels in the area can I assume?

There are on the southside and around 23rd and main streets! Stay away from those!

we%26#39;ve stayed at the Days Inn a couple of times (not in the past couple of years) and thought it was fine.

  • Without a car in Memphis?

There is public transportation in Memphis, but I%26#39;d say definitely stay Downtown to be at the heart of things.

Check out www.matatransit.com go to schedules, with a useful system map at bottom of that page.

Standard fare $1.40. Need to plan carefully as not always frequent service eg. 2A service daytime only hourly to/from airport and Downtown, but 43 to Graceland much more regular.

Trolley service fun for $1 for getting around within Downtown.

Taxi cabs are expensive and seem few and far between on the streets, except at the Airport, and are expensive, $29 to Marriott Downtown.

I visited Memphis for the first time last weekend from London. If you love music you really must go.

    Without a car in Memphis?

    Hi Paul,

    sightseeing advice

staying at Doubletree East on Sanderlin. Is it close to anything? Is there any tours that would take me to the main sights on Beale St etc? Thanks for the info.

    sightseeing advice

I stay at this hotel about once a month. Doubletree hotel used to be Hilton. Changed about a year ago. Not the newest hotel in town, showing some wear, but in safe area. Several restaurants and grocery close. When you stay there, try to get a room facing the NORTH side of the building. A relatively close and very active train track is about 1/4 mile to the South and can be a bit noisy. Indoor/Outdoor pool, steak house restaurant, pretty good. This is considered MidTown, so you are a good 20-25 minutes from downtown. As far as tour operators that pick up from hotel, while I have not used them, so this is not a recommendation, Blues City Tours (www.bluescitytours.com)has a lot of positive references (AAA, BBB, etc). Here is Memphis BBB site for this company.

mid December weather and things to do

Just found out we%26#39;ll be going to the mountains on December 19th through 21st. We%26#39;ve never been during winter at all. I%26#39;m concerned about the weather, what%26#39;s it like? We only plan on being in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville, probably won%26#39;t venture into the park any. Easy driving?

Keep in mind we%26#39;re Mississippi folk...we never see snow or anything worse than a wee bit of ice on the road a couple of times a year.

Anything to see or do that is a *must* this time of year?

mid December weather and things to do

    I *bump* myself...

Anyone care to share their thoughts on this?

mid December weather and things to do

Snow to speak of is rare within the cities of GB/PF and Sevierville.

In the park is a different story. And you should check your travel route from Mississippi carefully.

    average snowfall link: www.cabinfevervacations.com/weather.php

Personally, I think Dollywood at this time of year is a MUST!

If you like Christmas and all the trimmings, you will love it!

They have some really wonderful Christmas shows there as well!

    Well worth the price!

As for the weather, well, we live in the snow belt and have 2 feet right now!

    Yikes!

Thanks for the replies. We%26#39;ll be staying at the Comfort Inn Apple Valley in Sevierville. It%26#39;s our favorite place to stay!

As I said, we%26#39;ve never ever been to TN during December (or winter really). I%26#39;ve never driven in real winter situations before. I just didn%26#39;t know what it was like up there during mid-December.

I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll take in our usuals: Hard Rock Cafe and the Pancake Pantry in Gatlinburg and the Alabama Grill and NASCAR Cafe in Sevierville.

Are the outlet malls and shops open this time of year? Hillbilly golf?

Weather here is fine, very cold but no snow as of yet. Wear warm clothing, wind is pretty brisk right now. As far as attractions, everything is open through new years. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that reply! We are trying to plan accordingly and are packing all kinds of clothes. I just don%26#39;t want to see any ICE.

We%26#39;re leaving in the morning (Sunday)! I hope it%26#39;s nice up there, at least till Wednesday afternoon.

    :)

maybe a bit fo snow on the trees wnt hurt as long as it isnt on the roads, i think it would be pretty on te trees and on the mountians and whatnot just not on the roads.

We got home last night. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville was perfect! Blue skies, mid 20s in the mornings and low 40s for the highs. No bad weather at all! The drive up and back went smoothly. The traffic wasn%26#39;t bad around town either.

If anyone has any questions about our trip, I%26#39;d be glad to help. I%26#39;m going to review our pictures (mostly of Christmas lights) and post a link to those soon.

Oh, and you MUST eat at Rocky River Grill in Sevierville at Governor%26#39;s Crossing!! The best burger and potato soup I%26#39;ve ever eaten!

Here%26#39;s a few pics from our trip. Check %26#39;em out!

    Thanksgiving

I want to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thansgiving and I have a special request. My boyfriend who is 60 years old will be having open heart surgery on Monday 11/28 for the 2nd time in a year. I would like to ask everyone to keep him in your prayers. It is a very risky operation but it has to be done. Take care everyone and God Bless you all. I will let you know the outcome as soon as I can.

    Thanksgiving

    Brenda,

You know I am keeping him in my prayers.I hope your Thanksgiving is a good one. I have been sick for the last couple of days. But I%26#39;ll be ok. Everything will be fine. God will watch over him and keep him safe. Please don%26#39;t worry.

    Thanksgiving

Thoughts and prayers with you at this time.

Have a good Thanksgiving and try not to worry.

I know that is difficult. My own husband had prostate cancer and had to have surgery a month after our daughter was married in April in Gatlinburg.

    Cathie

**hugs** to you! I hope everything turns out okay, and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    -Lindsay

    Brenda,

I am keeping you both in my thoughts %26amp; prayers. My father-in-law also had to endure 2 heart surgeries this year...a month apart. He is now doing fine. Try to enjoy this Thanksgiving %26amp; remember that many people are thinking about you.

    Cathy

    Brenda,

I will keep you both in my prayers!!!! I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!!!

We did have a very good Thanksgiving but we did something a little different this year. He invited some of his family over and we had a Thanksgiving breakfast. We fixed country ham, sausage, gravy, biscuits, eggs, and fried potatoes. After everyone left he and I just sat around and watched tv for awhile and then we went and visited some more family. For dinner we made a big pot of homemade chili so our Thanksgiving was not the traditional. Thank you for all the prayers. It really means alot to me. I just have to keep my fingers crossed that everything will go ok.

Also, his son is coming in from Iraq to surprise him so I think this will help him. He has talked to him on the phone several times but he doesn%26#39;t know that he is coming home.

brenda2, that is so cool! I%26#39;m sure it will be the best surprise of his life!

Praying all the best for him and you!

Please update us when you can!

Good morning everyone. It is Friday morning 12/2 and just wanted to let everyone know that my boyfriend made it through the surgery on Monday. He is still in the hospital but he may get to come home in a couple of days. They had to do a double bypass instead of a triple because the third artery was so small that the doctor said it wasn%26#39;t worth the risk to try and fix it. He%26#39;s doing pretty good except for alot and I mean alot of swelling all over his body so they are trying to get that taken care of. Thank you all very much for your prayers because they do work. The Doctor said he was a very lucky man. Take care to all of you and God Bless.

    Summer Vacation--weekly rentals?

    Hi all,

As many of you know I have two rental cabins in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I could use your input: do you take week long vacations in the summer, or just short trips? And if you do come for the week, do you prefer a Fri to Fri or Sat to Sat stay?

At my Pigeon Forge cabin with the big view, I already have 4 weeks booked. But the other, more secluded one close to Gatlinburg has only one week rented next summer. Just wondered if maybe we%26#39;d do better with having an ';open'; calendar for that rental. We did weekly stays only from June through August this year at both cabins.

I know a lot of owners wonder about weekly rentals and if they should do them in the summer. We always provide a free night, so it works out to $131.66/night. Pretty reasonable for a premium rental cabin. But financially we don%26#39;t do as well giving away that free night. That%26#39;s why I%26#39;m sort of wrestling with this issue.

Since many of you are avid travelers to the area, I%26#39;d appreciate any personal thoughts and insight you can provide. It will definitely help me make a decision. Thanks!

    Summer Vacation--weekly rentals?

we use to go 2 times a year first trip was main vacation 7 nights then in winter we would go for maybe 3 or 4 nights.we only go once a year know ,we are going to florida in feb but im hoping we can get to the smokies sometime this year maybe this summer and i also was wondering if you have a website for your cabins or if you email pictures so people can see,we are always looking for places to stay in the smokies please let me know how to get in contact with you, thanks

    Summer Vacation--weekly rentals?

We never stay for a full week.

Generally we do arrival on Sunday depart on Thursday...last time we did do Saturday - depart on Tuesday due to family schedules working out better that way.

If it were just the two of us we might try a week but with planning around all our kids schedules (since they can%26#39;t seem to not go on vacation with us...haha) then it makes it harder to do a whole week.

    kayshane-

Click on the maps, etc. tab at the top of the tripadvisor page and you can see both of Onstarvoice%26#39;s properties listed there.

    kayshane-

I just noticed the information you were requesting from Onstar Voice may not be listed in the map tap section anymore. Try searching Blue Mist cabins. Good luck-

Normally when we do a vacation we stay for a whole week.

Say Thursday to Thursday and then we have the weekend to recoupe before returning to work.

you might want to log onto www.highvalleyrentals

i just found this site by accident....cabins are not onto of each other....on the map you can click on the cabin and it will show you pictures...prices are very reasonable....have not stayed here...maybe someone has and wld let us kn.....

    Thanks pkgobble!

    I will check it out!

Looking for a good comedy show in Pigeon Forge

Can anyone tell me of a good comedy show in Pigeon Forge. I know Comedy Barn is good but we have been there twice and would like to do something different. Also we have kids 7 and 10 so we are looking for something the whole family will enjoy. Thanks!

Looking for a good comedy show in Pigeon Forge

Don%26#39;t do Fiddler%26#39;s Feast. It is a bore. Sweet Fanny Adams in Gatlinburg is great. It is worth the money and effort to get there. Black Bears is fun as is Old Smoky Hoedown. If you like Alabaama%26#39;s music, there Alabama Grille is great for lunch. They have the walls covered with pictures and other memoralabilia on the wall as well as Tv%26#39;s in every corner running an Alabama concert.

Comedy barn was FABULOUS. I have been twice. Once with the kids and once without and loved it both times. Very crowd interactive.

    comedy barn mate

It is not really considered a comedy show but we really enjoyed Dixie Stampede when our kids were young...the food and show were good.

Kids thought it was neat to eat with their fingers.

Keeps you entertained while you are eating.

my uncle is fond of puckers bar and grill, kj%26#39;s saloon inside bennets bbq sounds fun when we go eat bbq

    bars %26amp; clubs

Puckers isn%26#39;t too bad. It%26#39;s just on a lower level so their isn%26#39;t much of a view if you want to sit and look out. Blaines is okay and has a 2nd floor dance club that gets pretty crowded later in the night. Smoky Mountain Brewery has a small dance floor and a good upstairs bar.

There%26#39;s also Hogs %26amp; Honeys, but I don%26#39;t know anything about it. It%26#39;s been mentioned a few times before on this forum.

    knoxville

Hi, would like to hear anybodys opinion of nice areas to live in knoxville. i%26#39;m considering moving there and not familiar with the area. thank you in advance:)

    knoxville

    Hello Bry69,

I don%26#39;t want to sound like a smart-alex, but most of the people coming to Gatlinburg are trying to avoid Knoxville!

I am sure that Knoxville has some nice places to live, but I have not seen them. We mostly have only seen the shopping and entertainment areas though!

You might want to consider living somewhere just outside of the city. I think that Maryville is a nice place and fairly close to Knoxville. You might also want to look into Alcoa and Seymore.

There also is a Knoxville forum on Tripadvisor, you might want to post there if you haven%26#39;t already.

How Late Are Restaurants Open in March?

Planning trip in March was wondering about how late most restaurants stay open ?

    Thanks

How Late Are Restaurants Open in March?

Usually around 1 am when the streets wrap up. Just like most any other time prehaps they stay open later on weekends.

How Late Are Restaurants Open in March?

You might be able to get a burger at McDonalds at 1 am, but I think you will find most of the real restaraunts stop serving by 8 or 9 pm. Alot of it depends on how busy they are.

  • Gatlinburg Trip Help

Hi all! I%26#39;ve been to Gatlinburg once when I was 16 and have not been back because my mom doesn%26#39;t like mountains (I however LOVED it!). Anyways, I want to take my nephew (he%26#39;s 11) there this summer after school lets out because he%26#39;s doing great in school. He gets out May 22. I was wondering how the crowds are around that time. I%26#39;m debating whether or not to take him at the end of May or early June.

Also, we%26#39;re going to spend a good amount of time in the National Park and I wanted to know what some good trails/waterfalls are. I%26#39;ve only been on one, Laural Falls and LOVED it. I was also wondering about Clingman%26#39;s Dome. How bad is the walk up there?

I know there is a lot of wildlife around, but where is the best places to see them. I%26#39;m really looking for deers and small animals (I don%26#39;t do well with bears and wolves...).

One thing we did was Ober Gatlinburg and I had a lot of fun. But I%26#39;m not sure if it%26#39;s worth going there in the summer. Is there anything interesting up there during the summer??

Thanks in advance. Sorry for all the questions!!

    Gatlinburg Trip Help

Hi Tigerchic1, Things have changed quite a bit since you were here. Best time would be May, June kicks off real quick and gets busy fast. There%26#39;s alot of new things to do here now. The new aquarium is incredible, it rivals just about anything you could find in florida. Tons of new shows from The Black bear Jamboree to the Dixie Stampede dinner theater. There%26#39;s agreat go-cart track called nascar speed track that any 11 year old would love, and most adults for that matter. Dollywood theme park has grown leaps and bounds and has a ton of new rides suitable for all ages, not to mention all the shows there. Clingmans dome is a pretty good hike, might be ok for an 11 year old but if he%26#39;s like my 11 year old daughter, he may get bored after a while and carrying them back down is not much fun, lol. The Chimneys offer a great picknicking area and beautiful white water rapids to view. Just keep a hold of him around the water cause its VERY cold and very fast. Now for wildlife, you must visit Cades Cove. A lot of deer and prarie dogs to be found. Ober Gatlinburg is fun year round, a couple rides and year round ice skating. Now if he likes to laugh, he may like the comedy barn, it%26#39;s a family comedy show and you can buy copies of the show you attended to view at home. All in all I think you%26#39;ll find plenty to do, like I said this place has grown quickly over the past couple of years. Hope this helps.

    Gatlinburg Trip Help

I expected that this question would get a ton of response so I didn%26#39;t bother when I first saw it.

I think the best time to visit Gatlinburg is April and May. The weather is mild, everything is blooming, and the crowds are small.

For all of your National Park questons can be answered at www.nps.gov go to the link for the Smokies. Be sure to go to the Sugarland visitor center as they have some great displays and can answer all of you questions. The best time to see wildlife is at sundown in Cades Cove.

    Hi Tigerchic,

I%26#39;d recommend that you come to Gatlinburg right after the Memorial Day weekend. I was there last year Mon-Tues-Wed-Thur (post Memorial Day) and it was great because all the traffic was headed out of town on Monday ;-) and the rest of the week it was nice weather and not busy at all.

I%26#39;d second SteveinGatlinburg%26#39;s suggestions. Clingman%26#39;s Dome is a very short hike (about a quarter mile?) but it%26#39;s got a steep grade so you%26#39;re always walking up up up. It%26#39;s mostly a car ride, then the last part is walking up to the observation tower. Personally, I like Newfound Gap for the many beautiful views and photo ops but I%26#39;d rather hike in the lower elevations or go to Cade%26#39;s Cove.

If you plan to be in the park quite a bit, your nephew might enjoy trying a scavenger hike adventure. I found a book called Scavenger Hike Adventures and Mountain Journal by Kat and John LeFevre and it has 14 really cool hikes. Ýou get to search for all kinds of things and learn so much more than if you were just hiking along. Here is the web site I found them at www.scavengerhikeadventures.com The book is 10.95 and is a good investment for people who plan to spend some time in the park and want something different to do.

BTW, I have no affiliation with the authors. I just bought their book and really like it :)

Ozzy look alike at Hard Rock Cafe

What happened to the Ozzy Ozbourne look alike at the Hard Rock Cafe/ I liked that dude, he was funny and took pics with people.

Ozzy look alike at Hard Rock Cafe

We asked about him when we were there this June. I can%26#39;t go into too many details, because I might get in trouble and TripAdvisor may not let me post it. But we were told that he was caught doing something very inappropriate, and was fired.

Ozzy look alike at Hard Rock Cafe

Ahh, Hard Rock Gatlinburg, still one of our many ';must eat at'; restaurants while we%26#39;re on vacation. The Tupelo Chicken Tenders are the best anywhere! :) I also like the cheeseburger with the barbeque sauce and caramelized onions. Yum!

You%26#39;re making me hungry!! I love the Haystack salad with fried chicken strips. Those crunchy glazed pecan bits make that salad outta this world. It%26#39;s so big that I always split it with my daughter. What%26#39;s nice is Hard Rock doesn%26#39;t get in a tizzy when you ask for an extra plate to share a meal. Cool with me :)

i agree, the chicken tenders are awesome.

    The Coffee Loft

Is the coffee loft any good? ideas, comments, bashings? what do they have besides coffee?

    The Coffee Loft

they have donuts, many things to get you off your feet for the day.

if you want somthing closer to the shopping and excitement, id choose the donut friar.

    Routes to Pigeon Forge

I%26#39;ve never seen anything so difficult as trying to find out how to get to Pigeon Forge without going on the parkway. It seems like everyone is in cohoots to make sure you have to drive by every tacky attraction between sevierville and gatlinburg! I%26#39;m coming from Lexington, KY and I%26#39;ve found a map of how to get to Pigeon Forge out of Knoxville via Maryville and Townsend. Does anyone travel this road or have any advice about it? What is the road like? Is is a time saver on like new year%26#39;s weekend? Would appreciate any comments!

    Routes to Pigeon Forge

I drove this road for the first time this past Thursday %26amp; it wasn%26#39;t too bad. If you come in on I-75 to I-40 west. Go about a mile and pick up Alcoa highway and take it to Maryville and follow the signs to Townsend. Once past Townsend, stay on 321, do not go into Smokey Mtn National Park. This road will be a 2 lane, somewhat windy road, but more than manageable. Don%26#39;t know if it was perception of just not having to %26#39;sit%26#39; in traffic, but it didn%26#39;t seem as if it took that long to get to PF. It will take you into PF about 1 block from the Comedy Barn, pretty much in the middle of PF. My choice of this route or fighting the parkway traffic, I would choose this one.

    Good luck.

    Routes to Pigeon Forge

Go to the Gatlinburg Chamber of commerce website. They give alternate routes to Gatlinburg with some pretty good maps. A couple of the routes take you through Pigeon Forge.

You will want to avoid Exit 407 on I-40 and TN 66. The stoplight coming into Sevierville can be backed up for 2-3 hours!!

I don%26#39;t know which route you are looking at, but if you take the 640 loop to I-140 this will drop you on US 129 just outside of Alcoa. This will save you some time on when traffic is backed up on 66. It is also much more relaxing and scenic!

Thanks for the replies, it confirms my suspicion that there%26#39;s a better way!

Looking for suggestions for places to stay in area

I have spent time reading a lot of the postings and would like to get advice from the experts--that%26#39;s you!

My family is planning a trip to the area the first weekend of Oct (Sept. 20 - Oct. 3). It has been several years since I have been to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg.

I would like to get your suggestions about places to stay. Here is the kicker--we have three different families going: my wife and me and our 2 year old, brother and sister-in-law and older parent for a total of six.

The initial question would be about types of places--would you recommend a cabin or hotel-type place. I think that we would prefer a three bedroom place. But I also wondered if it would be more economical to find a hotel that maybe had a suite (or 2 BD) and then simply get another room.

Are there any hotels that have three separate sleeping areas?

I wasn%26#39;t sure if getting a cabin would be good for us since our 2 year old likes his afternoon naps. That would force someone to make the trip back into the mountains every day for the nap. Thought a hotel may be easier in this regard.

Has anyone else had a trip with similar family needs? I would love to hear your advice about places to stay.

    Thanks for your help!!

Looking for suggestions for places to stay in area

Oops! I meant to say from Sept. 30 - Oct. 3.

Once again, I appreciate all of your help and suggestions.

Looking for suggestions for places to stay in area

Are you wanting to stay in PF or in Gatlinburg?

When our daughter got married in Gatlinburg we rented one of the Penthouse Suites at the Clarion. They gave us a discount because we had her reception there but they might offer one if that is not a busy time of the year for them. You are going in between school starting and peak for fall so that might work.

Anyways, the one we stayed in was like an apartment.

Two sleeping areas on opposite sides of the living room/dining room/kitchen. One bedroom had 2 queen beds...the other bedroom had a King...both had separate baths and jacuzzi tubs. The couch was also a sleeper sofa.

Right on the Parkway....easy to walk everywhere.

There are also some condo places downtown that prob. have 3 bedroom units....someone might be able to give you info on those.

My family and I are also going in October, and I had a similiar situation as you do with trying to decide if we should get a suite somewhere and an extra room or what. We have seven people going, my husband and I plus my 3 year old, my 16 year old son and his friend, and my mother and father in law. After reading a lot of reviews, and doing a lot of research, I chose to go with a condo near dollywood.

The website is resortquestsmokymountains.com. We are staying in the newer condos that were built in 2004, and it has 3 bedrooms, 3 baths livingroom, full kitchen all the space we needed for 214.95 a night. You really can%26#39;t beat that because by the time you get a suite somewhere, plus an extra room you will be spending more than that. Plus this way, everyone has their own private bedroom and bath, and we are like you, our little one may need a nap during the day, and with this condo you are right there beside dollywood, and close to everything so it won%26#39;t be so far to go back to.

Check out their website and see what you think.

Hello! A couple years ago we had a situation some what like this. My family consists of my parents, my elderly aunt, and myself. We needed 3 beds and that is somewhat hard to find with a hotel. We stayed in Pigeon Forge at the Riverside Motor Lodge. It had 2 seperate bed rooms, and one of the bedrooms had 2 queen beds, the other had one queen bed. Needless to say our sleeping arangement was solved.

If you find a hotel or motel that you absolutely love and it only offers 2 beds at the most, most will usually bring in a roll away bed for you.

Try asking for a family suite, they usually offer at least three beds.

My fienace and I are planning our honeymoon in Oct. also, and we are staying at the Colonial House. It has family suites, but I%26#39;m not sure on the number of beds. I%26#39;m sure you could call and find out. Their website is

    www.colonialhousemotel.com

They are also resonably cheat, for very nice rooms with a view.

In Pigeon Forge there are some great 3 bedroom condos at Whispering Pines. There is a pool and small lazy river. The condo we stayed in was beautiful. Its on the parkway so you are close to everything.Hope you enjoy your trip to Tn.

Thanks for all of the helpful info. After checking these out, if I have questions, I will be sure to ask more questions.

Powcat, I think that my sister-in-law prefers Gatlinburg. But I know that getting the room that we want is important, too.

Any suggestions that people have about accomodations is greatly appreciated.

We recently (June 2005) had our family vacation in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. We stayed at the Cabin Patch - a rental cabin from Black Bear Lodging - with 5 bedrooms/3 bathrooms in Pigeon Forge. We had a total of 9 family members. My husband %26amp; I stayed on the top floor. We had our own sitting room, bedroom %26amp; bathroom. My husband%26#39;s parents stayed on the 2nd floor (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, %26amp; dining room). My brother-in-law, his wife %26amp; 3 children stayed on the bottom floor (game room, 3 bedrooms, %26amp; bathroom). The cabin was awesome! Very neat, clean %26amp; well-kept. The big screen TV, however, couldn%26#39;t be seen in the daytime because of glare from all the windows %26amp; skylight but we weren%26#39;t really around to watch TV much. The staff at Black Bear Lodging was phenomenal! They were extremely accomodating %26amp; friendly. We were so impressed, we%26#39;ve recommended it to others. Hope you have a good trip! Try the Black Bear Lodging website: www.blackbearlodging.com

They have cabins of all sizes %26amp; you can take a virtual tour.

the park place condos on the corner of river road and ski mtn. road are very nice and convenient to walk to the parkway in gatlinburg. They are on the river and have a nice pool and I believe that they have 2,3,%26amp;4 bdrm. condos. They have a web site that you can access thru yahoo.

I usually stay at the Colonial House as well, until the day I noticed that the motel did not change the sheets after the guest leave. Nor do they wash the blankets they are folded up and placed right back in the drawer. A nice view is wonderful but a clean bed is more important .

The best place we have ever stayed is Timber Tops Cabins. They are always spotless and since you are booking pretty close to the time you are staying they have ';last minute deals'; on all remaining cabins, like 4 nights for the price of 3...

I don%26#39;t know if I can put their website on here but look up ';timber tops cabins'; on google. Excellent Cabins!

    Ashland City area???

Does anyone know about Cheatham county, and Ashland City in particular? I know it seems to be a smaller town, is it a nice place to live? Family friendly? Good school systems?

    Ashland City area???

I can ask my neighbors who are local natives.

I hear it is a very nice, beautiful place.

    Ashland City area???

you are correct, it is a small town with a population just under 5000. Nashville is about 25 miles away. Other close communities are Dickson and Clarksville.

As for things to do close by, it will be more of the nature variety, parks (local %26amp; state), lakes, rivers, etc.

It is not a fast growing county, maybe 1% per year. That honor is for Williamson Co.

While no first hand knowledge of schools, they always seem to do a fine job when I talk to people from there.

As for a nice place to live, I would say yes, if you are looking for a small, rural, not fast growing town. If you are looking for things to do, shopping, dining, malls, etc., you should probably keep looking.

The kitchens on the property - First a man by the name of Alvin worked for the hotel as a cook since the hotel had opened.? Upon his 30th anniversary the owners purchased a gift for him, a new boat.? The first time Alvin took this boat out it sank and he drowned.? There are two kitchens on the property the Holidome (for restaurant) and the Tower (for Banquet facilities).? Alvin is said to haunt both of the kitchens.? Cooks coming in for the early breakfast hours have reported hearing their names whispered, dishes breaking and flying across the kitchen, and faucets turning themselves on and off.? There are many other stories of this hotel.?

First, in room 471, in the summer of 1999, a businessman was out of town staying in this room.? He was walking around the pool (next to this room) for most of the evening and into the night hours.? When the pool closed a maintenance man told him that he would have to leave the pool was closed.? This is the last anyone would see of this gentleman because, the next day when he was supposed to check out and did not, a maid went to the room to check things out.? Upon walking into the room, she found the man had committed suicide with a 357.? He had also left a $3.57 tip on the table.? Many have claimed to see a shadow walking around the pool at night in the windows of the rooms around the pool.? Next, in the early 1980%26#39;s, a boy scout group had rented the entire 7th. Floor of the building.? This is hard to accurately describe, since no one who was working there at the time cares to elaborate on any details from this event, but all that was gathered is that the boy scout leader had apparently gone crazy and killed some of the scouts before being caught.? When the building was closed for the winter one year (Gatlinburg is a tourist town which is really only full for the summer and autumn months) an employee was making rounds through the building and stopped on the 7 th. Floor and heard running and screams he ran to check for intruders only to find nothing, no rooms were rented in the Tower that evening.?

Just curious? Anyone have any others?

    Hauntings In Gatlinburg?

Are those questions or statements? I have been to the Holiday Inn Sun Spree, the only thing that was scary were the rooms, they are a little out dated.

I don%26#39;t know of any firsthand, but there is a walking tour of Haunted sites in the city you can take.

And there are several books about hauntings and mysterious happenings in the GSNP / Gatlinburg area. They are available at several shops in town and Sugarlands I think.

BTW, Wench01, good one about the rooms, thats true.

I%26#39;m going to gatlinburg for the first time this new years weekend. My friends and I are staying at the sunspree, but now I%26#39;m all weirded out about it, because of the bad reviews and the haunting rumors. Where did you hear about these stories? Did you confirm any of them with the employees? I hope I have a good time this weekend, I hope the sunspree doesnt scare me away from going to gatlinburg again! Carrie

I%26#39;ve never heard anything about the Sunspree. However, there was a murder at the Rocky Top Motel awhile back. I saw it on ';City Confidential'; on A%26amp;E. Don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s haunted, though!

    Knoxville airport to Pigeon Forge?

We are coming in from the airport next Monday(Lord willing my mom is still ok) and have been down a few times.

Just wondering from locals or regulars what the best route is?

I hoping that traffic won%26#39;t be too bad since it is post holiday.

Thanks to everyone on these boards, you have been so helpful.

We ended up booking in Sherwood Forest from a private owner and it looks great and we got a great rate. I haven%26#39;t heard too much about the resort on these boards, but I will let you know!

    Thanks again for any info!

    Knoxville airport to Pigeon Forge?

    Hi Lindy,

Come out of the airport and go left onto the four lane into Knoxville. Take I40 toward Asheville, get off at the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge exit. I believe its #407. This will put you on Winfield Dunn Parkway (or 441) to go into Pigeon Forge. Should take no more than an hour after you leave the airport.

For a more scenic route, go right out of the airport and continue on the same road through Maryville, Walland and Townsend. Take a left just past Townsend (at what we locals call the ';Y'; - right goes to Cades Cove, left to Gatlinburg) and follow River Road into Gatlinburg. This route is maybe a half hour longer.

Have a great and safe trip. I hope you mother continues to improve also.

    Knoxville airport to Pigeon Forge?

If you are going into Pigeon Forge, I would go the scenic route. Once headed toward Townsend, stay on 321. It ends at Pigeon Forge. I steer clear of the interstate whenever possible. It is almost always conjested with traffic. Also, taking exit 407 has you going through Sevierville and stuck in SEVERE traffic the entire length of road through Pigeon Forge. So there is a chance that the longer scenic way could take less time. It all depends on what time of day you arrive. But, as I said, I would go through Townsend instead of the interstate any time of the day anyway to avoid going through Knoxville and then through Sevierville...

    Ok, Now I%26#39;m a little confused(easily done;o)

Our flight comes in at 11AM so on Monday. I%26#39;m not sure how bad traffic will be. I%26#39;m hoping that week it won%26#39;t be too bad.

So, KLM, can you explain it a little clearer for me?

    Thanks

Lindy, I believe what KLM is referring to is on heavy traffic days you can get in bumper to bumper traffic almost from the interstate to Pigeon Forge. Bumper to bumper traffic means it could easily take you another hour or more once you exit off the interstate.

However, with your flight coming in on a Monday you should get to exit 407 no later than 1:00 pm (I%26#39;m figuring your time to retrieve luggage, get your rental car, and get away from the airport).

I still think the interstate will be the quickest, just not the prettiest, route to go. I think most people will be leaving the area on Monday after a long weekend (we will) so traffic should be going the opposite way from you.

    Good luck..........

I agree that coming in on Monday you should not have any problems with traffic going the interstate to exit 407 into PF/Gatlinburg.

Now Friday or Saturday would be a totally different story...

We have gone both ways and it took us longer once going the scenic route mainly due to the curvy roads and getting stuck behind slow moving traffic..

The traffic on Monday could still be really bad, I am looking out my window on a Wednesday evening and can see total gridlock on the Parkway!! Gatlinburg will look like a ghost town on Tuesday :).

We have driven back and forth to the airport every way that you can go. The quickest way to Gatlinburg is to turn left out of the airport towards Knoxville on 129. Take a right onto John Sevier Highway and get off at the intersection of U.S 441 (watch closely, its easy to miss). Just follow 441 through Sevierville (road turns right there), Pigeon Forge and into Gatlinburg. 1 hour and 10 minutes.

If you are driving before 8 am or after 8 pm you can drive through Knoxfille in the same amount of time, you will probably regret it!!!

I tried to cut and paste a map that I made for our guests, but had no luck. I am going to give you the link to our directions page which shows all the major routes into Gatlinburg. I hope this doesn%26#39;t trigger the ';posting police';.

    www.laurelspringslodge.com/directions.htm

    Laural...

';Citizens Arrest, citizens arrest';, at least that%26#39;s what Gomer said when arresting Barney on one of the Andy Griffith episodes.

I started to tell Lindy about coming up John Sevier also, but was afraid it might be hard giving directions to get on it out of Knoxville. We too, usually go that way when leaving UT football games and heading back up to Gatlinburg.

Looks like you are going to have an unusually warm weekend for New Years.

    Thanks so much.

I know we have driven the John Sevier highway before. We have taken different routes almost every time(at least they looked different due to construction)

I am thinking it won%26#39;t be too bad down there during the week traffic wise.

The weather says 60%26#39;s for part of the week.

Living in the snowbelt of Ohio, that sounds like summer! Yippie!

I won%26#39;t bother trying to comment further on my input because Laurel-Springs%26#39; directions sound good to me. ANYTHING, but the interstate!

    KLM

    Holiday Inn Sunspree

This place is haunted, it is cheesy and haunted. The tower rooms are really scary, but if you want to poop your pants and be haunted then do it, i heard that a guy killed himself in his room in the towers with a 357 magnum and left a 3.57$ tip for the maid. any ideas or comments on what happened here is it really haunted, or is it fiction.

    Stay gold.

    Dave

    Holiday Inn Sunspree

Oh my God! Where did you hear something like that? I have a friend from Louisiana up there now and she is supposed to be staying at this hotel in the tower. I don%26#39;t think this is something that she would want to hear. I have never stayed in the tower rooms but I have stayed at this hotel before and it wasn%26#39;t that bad. This may be true but I just don%26#39;t believe it. Ok, Mountain Man what do you think about this one? Fact or Fiction? You would know I%26#39;m sure since you are a local.

    Holiday Inn Sunspree

    Fact or Ficture...who really knows.

Found this interesting site about hauntings.

You can scan down to Gatlinburg and there are several. The only one that I have really heard about is the Greenbrier Rest. one.

    theshadowlands.net/places/tennessee.htm

    juiceenewsdaily.com/0205/…haunted_tennessee

That site is really interesting. I like to read about/watch TV shows about haunted places, but I%26#39;m a little too chicken to actually go to those places. Thanks for the info.

    Me too!!!

Ive been to the Greenbrier, but not on purpose.

Honestly would not be surprised about the Holiday Inn Sunspree being haunted the place in my husband and my opinion is the place is the worst place to stay while in gatlinburg. The place is dirty and smells really bad and the rooms are very dark and scary you could not pay me enough to stay here again. After 1 night we checked out and stayed somewhere else.

There are several books on the subject of mysterious happenings in the Gatlinburg/GSMNP area.

I saw a few for sale in Johnathian%26#39;s Sportsware on the Parkway.

Nashville New Year's Eve - Coming from Kalamazoo

Help us out, Nashville. Kristin and I are single women in our mid-30s who want to avoid entering 2006 doing the same old things in Kalamazoo MI. So, we%26#39;re coming down to Nashville to drink a little beer, dance, and hear some good old bluegrass or country music. Ideas?

We%26#39;ve heard good things about the Fiddle and Steel and Lonnie%26#39;s and Printer%26#39;s Alley in general. Hole in the wall bars suit us fine. Anywhere else we should go?

We%26#39;re looking for safe/cheap lodging as well for Friday 12/30 and Sat 12/31. Nothing fancy is okay, safe is our #1 concern.

Also, Kristin plays guitar and sings. She wants to pick up some sheet music while we%26#39;re there, ideas on good shops for that?

As far as eats, we%26#39;re looking for local diners, good cooking, and a lack of tour buses. Ideas?

Thanks so much. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

    Amy

Nashville New Year's Eve - Coming from Kalamazoo

I don%26#39;t know about the specific events that are going on in downtown Nashville on New Year%26#39;s Eve yet, but I just wanted to give you a little info to get you started.

In addition to Lonnie%26#39;s/Printer%26#39;s Alley, you can have a great time at the ';honkey tonks'; on Broadway. I don%26#39;t even like country music all that much, and I%26#39;ve had a great time at these places! Tootsie%26#39;s, Robert%26#39;s, all those places are fun, and I think you should give them a try.

As far as hotels, I just did a Mobissimo travel search looking for lodging 12/30 and 12/31, and it looks like your best bet for location, price, and safety might be the Days Inn Music Row/Vanderbilt. It%26#39;s $99/night. Here%26#39;s a link: daysinn.com/DaysInn/…

    Have fun in Nashville!

Nashville New Year's Eve - Coming from Kalamazoo

Amy, This year%26#39;s big New Year%26#39;s Eve concert is Brooks and Dunn with Big and Rich at Gaylord. The Bluegrass Inn and WildHorse Salon are on 2nd ave, Boardway also has Jim and Layla%26#39;s.

Are you flying in or driving?

Some of the better hotel have downtown shuttle service. In the downtown area are Hilton, Doubletree, Renaissance and Sheraton.

The Hilton is the newest and very nice, you might look into the Embassy Suites by Vanderbilt. They offer complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast each morning, Evening Manager’s Reception and Shuttle service within a 2-mile radiuses (my wife company uses them for out of town speakers).

Try Jack%26#39;s bar-b-que on Broadway, The White Trash Cafe for a meat and three and Rotier%26#39;s on Elliston Place.

If you have time go by The Bluebird Cafe (Green Hills area).

Amy,WoW Brooks and Dunn with Big and Rich that would be fun for New Year%26#39;s eve they rock in concert. You should check out some of the honky tonks on Broadway the day before and after the concert. The Holiday Inn on broadway is in a great location near both the concert and Honky tonks. The Holiday inn is the only hotel that doesn%26#39;t charge parking and they have a free breakfast.I wish I could go to the concert and Honky tonks I love going to Nashville. If you decided to go to the concert you should get tickets of of their website.Have a great time.

You should eat at the Wild horse saloon they have free country line dancing and it is a lot of fun.It is one of my favorite restaurants in Nashville.

We are coming from Ohio for New Years

in Nashville.WE are staying at the Renaissance

which is walking distance to all the fun places.

The Hilton which is a bit more pricy

is also a great location.Jacks is great barbeque

place and the Palm is an excellent steak house.

If you like drinking beer, there are about

    30 bars/honkey tonks/pubs/clubs all within a mile

from one another on and around Broadway

and 2nd ave.Kristen should bring her guitar,

a few of the places on Broadway allow people

to perform for tips during the afternoon.

    Have fun!!!

I%26#39;m just a little younger than you are, and my favorite places in town are all on Broadway. I don%26#39;t care for Printer%26#39;s Alley except for Bourbon Street Blues. None of the country bars on Broadway charge a cover, so you can hop around until you find what you%26#39;re looking for.

As for restaurants, I suggest Jack%26#39;s on Broadway, Casabona on Broadway, Pancake Pantry in Hillsboro Village. If you%26#39;re driving, it%26#39;s worth the effort to make a twenty-minute drive from downtown out to the Loveless Cafe.

    Have a good time!

library.nashville.org has a page of links you should see.

the nash convention bureau has a list of hotels. the downtown hotels run around 150 but you can go a mile down broadway/west end and get rooms for 80-100. These are the average prices, i don%26#39;t know what the new years prices are.

You might want to take the one hour tour that leaves at the hard rock, it goes to all the main places. It cost 12 dollars.

There is lots of country music, but the bluegrass inn next door to tootsies has more of a bluegrass format.

Camp2520, My friend and I are coming up to nashville, from Tampa, Fl, for New Years. We are both single men that just turned 30. Want to meet for a Beer on broadway on friday night? We normally hang out around The Bluegrass Inn on broadway. Let me know,

    Ken

My husband and I live here from Grand Rapids Michigan, both of us early 30%26#39;s. We don%26#39;t know where we are going. Would you like an apartment for the night? My mother also lives here and she will be going to Minnesota for new years eve. Available and the neighbor guys across are single and one writes sheet music!

Too funny I%26#39;m coming down from Lansing for the same reason.. solo.. any good musical acts in town? Along the lines of a Nanci Griffith or a Lyle Lovett.. some country but not too much.. unknowns are fine

I%26#39;ve heard about the Bluebird Cafe and plan on doing that Friday night..

    best location to stay?

I will be going to Memphis for the 1st time and I would like to see Graceland, sun studio, Beal street, zoo,. Where is the best place and location? by the airport, downtown, beal street or is beal street downtown? and is driving to Nashville possiable for a day drive and worth it? Thanks

    best location to stay?

Depending on your budget, I would stay downtown. A block or 2 up from Beale St. (which is downtown), you have the Peabody hotel, a Memphis institution. Within a block of that is a Hampton Inn %26amp; Suites, a new Doubletree, Holiday Inn...all within walking distance of Beale, a 20 minute drive to Graceland, 5 minutes to Sun Studios. I would not recommend staying near Graceland. Not the best side of town, nor many decent hotels.

As for a trip to Nashville, plan on a 3.5 hour drive each way. I guess whether or not it is worth it depends on why you are going. If you are going to drive 7 hours round trip for a 5 hour visit, I would say, not worth the effort (although I live in Nashville). Come when you can spend more time.

Good luck, and welcome to Tennessee!!

    best location to stay?

Definitely stay away from hotels in the Graceland area. You%26#39;re best bet for what you want to do would be to stay downtown.

I agree! Stay downtown. There are lots of options, but our new favorite is the Marriott Residence Inn downtown. Reasonable rates and a VERY good free breakfast.

I live in Memphis. You are perfectly safe downtown as you would be in any other city, say Chicago. Stay at the Peabody, the Madison or the Hampton. It will be fine and you will enjoy your stay.

A plus of staying downtown is that there is no drinking and driving. And, I walked, alone from the theater to a bar, two blocks away, and had no problem. That%26#39;s why we have cell phones and can always meet someone if you do seperate.

    i am back

yo, im back on the forums and i haev turned 14, w00t, anyway, we are already planning our gatlinburg outting next year around the 4th of july. any sugguestions. ive never been on the 4th.

i hear its gonna be a pain to get reservations though, so were gonna get them early.

    Stay gold.

    Dave

    i am back

    Stay gold?

yo, anyway, we were at the July 4th parade last year. It starts at 12:01 a.m. on the 4th.

    i am back

stay gold meaning stay safe, and stay rich and pure.

thanks alot, how long does the parade last? do you line the streets or do you watch from motels?

Yo,the parade lasts an hour or so and it is pretty good with the lit floats. You can see from some of the motels that are close to the strip.Your best bet is to set out your chairs early in the day.You won%26#39;t be the only one with that idea.

Mr ddawg92...enjoy your two week holiday break in BG....

We watched from the 2nd floor of Blaines, but you have to get there early to get a table outside along the balcony. And it was no more than an hour long.

    Blaines? What is Blaines?

a bar and grill near the space needle and burgerking i do beleive

Stay gold is a quote from the book and movie The Outsiders. It%26#39;s a must read for teens.

Glad you had fun in Gatlinburg. Make your reservations now for the 4th!

I read The Outsiders in the early 70s. I guess that book is timeless? It seemed kind of dated, even then? Hmmm...

  • hotel with piano or jazz bar

Anyone have suggestions on a Hotel with a nice piano or jazz bar. Looking for a romantic getaway between Christmas %26amp; New Years, probably during the week.

    Thanks

hotel with piano or jazz bar

Sorry that your post had not received any responses. I know the Peabody often has a pianist but I am not sure at what times of the day and week. You could probably call and find out. I don%26#39;t know if the Madison has a pianist but again, you could call and find out. I think those two would be your best bets.

hotel with piano or jazz bar

    Thanks for the reply.

Maybe I should just look for a hotel with a bar %26amp; music. I remember the old Hyatt off Poplar had a jazz type bar, but I %26#39;m not sure of their new name.

Have you stayed at the Madison?

    Thanks again.

The pianist at the Peabody is nothing special. In fact, we make it a point to sit as far away from the piano as possible. During break, the piano transforms to a player...it%26#39;s awful. The bar/restaurant at the Madison is very small. We%26#39;ve only been there a few times, but I haven%26#39;t seen any room for an entertainer.

I believe the Hyatt you%26#39;re talking of is now the Park Vista (Hilton owned)...if memory serves, the piano/bar area is/was Satchmo%26#39;s (you%26#39;d want to double check on that). Memphis not really known for its quiet jazz bars...more ';bluesy';. Peabody does have the occasional piano player in lobby and in its bar area. Another piano bar (though it%26#39;s lively and not a quiet jazz type) is Pat O%26#39;Brien%26#39;s dueling pianists on Beale. If you decide to stay downtown, may want to check to see if Isaac Haye%26#39;s place has jazz the night you are there. :-)

The Park Vista is now the Hilton. I believe after all the renovations, the piano bar is no more. The %26#39;new%26#39; hotel is very nice, however if you are looking for music, you stand a better chance by staying downtown.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I was hoping to find a Hotel, resturant %26amp; lounge with nice music all under 1 roof. I would think Memphis would have at least one such place.

The Peabody is not my cup of tea. Way over priced! [Yes I know it%26#39;s history]

According to their website, the Hilton [formerly Park Vista] has a lobby bar.

    Thanks for all the help!

    Quality Inn Creekside

Hi can anyone tell me about the Quality Inn Creekside. The reviews are too mixed to tell the truth from. I am looking for a cheap room for my self, husband plus two preschool children the second week in June and want something that is on the river with a balcony and need it to be a great rate and CLEAN!

    Quality Inn Creekside

I was there in July.It is okay but nothing like its website.Pros- furniture in our room seemed new.Close to the parkway in downtown town.Friendly staff.Nice breakfast.Cons-Room not as clean as it first appeared.Parking tight. We had stained or dirty sheets on one of our beds. The river not a river.A very small creek.Keycards did not work well. The pool was small and cold even in July.If you have any specific questions I can help.Just post.I liked Zoders and Greystone Lodge better.I hope this helps.I would not personally stay there again unless most of my other choices were booked.

    Quality Inn Creekside

We stayed there one time...had a room over the creek...nothing special..room was huge, though.

Rates were good..right off parkway so very convenient to everything. I heard they did some remodeling but not sure when that was.

We liked the Clarion the best of any places that we have stayed recently.

Thanks for your help. I have stayed at the Rocky Waters before but wanted something a little closer to the center of town.

    Greystone all the way babay!

    I vote for the Clarion.

    Lunch on Beale Street

Can someone recommend a restaurant on Beale Street for a Friday afternoon lunch? We are going to Ruths Chris that evening so skip steak. Is there maybe a local favorite or perhaps some good BBQ?

    Thanks in advance!

    Lunch on Beale Street

Rum Boogie and Blues City have good BBQ ribs, etc. Do not go to the Rendezvous, everyone recommends it but it%26#39;s not that great. Not on Beale either. There%26#39;s a good cajun place, red interior...inn between Rum Boogie and Club 152 on Beale....King%26#39;s Palace maybe? Any of the little places on Beale would be fine. There%26#39;s a BB King%26#39;s which might be good if you like him and want something touisty. Hard Rock but you can find that anywhere. The best BBQ in the city isn%26#39;t in the downtown area, so it would be a drive.

    Lunch on Beale Street

Alfred%26#39;s used to have a good plate lunch special. I haven%26#39;t been there in years but the food was good, the portions were large and the price was reasonable.

Funny, I%26#39;ve heard that the prices at Fleming%26#39;s Steak on Poplar are stupid.

Well, this here Memphian enjoys The Rendezvous but I would not recommend it for lunch. If you are downtown for lunch, I%26#39;d recommend McEwens. For a touristy type lunch, BBKinds or Alfred%26#39;s but the food will not be that great.

I find there are many good restaurants in the Memphis area.

Had imo the best ribs at the Rum Boogie cafe, a fun place for its music memorabilia, and I think they offer lunchtime deals, so maybe worth checking out.

a few blocks away is Sawaddii. If you like Thai Cuisine, it is located at 121 Union Ave. Check out Sawaddii.com.

    GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

King%26#39;s Palace Cafe is very good. We went there for dinner and were pleased with everything we tried. Prices are reasonable and there is a good selection. We also had ribs at Silky O%26#39;Sullivans; they were really good! Enjoy!

Any of the honky tonks on broadway are great any time and especially on new years eve. don%26#39;t miss brandon giles at jim %26amp; layla%26#39;s bluegrass inn on broadway - 9:00 PM - 11:00PM new years eve.

I would appreciate info too!! Does anyone know which bars on Broadway will be charging to get in??

None of the honky tonks on Broadway charge a cover. The dance clubs do, and some of the 2nd Avenue bars do (including Wildhorse, but I think they%26#39;re having a show that night, anyway). The honky tonks do pass around a tip jar, and that%26#39;s because the bands are paid little to nothing.

I know that Tootsies will be charging to get in. i was in Nashville two weeks ago and there was a sign advertizing for ';New years Tikets'; on tootsies.

what about for younger college aged kids? Where would be the best place for us to go?

For younger college kids, go to buffalo billards, or bar nashville. Buffalo billards doesn%26#39;t charge a cover for the downstairs bar. Bar nashville might charge a cover, but it will be packed. If you like clubs, go to Decades. It is on the corner of 2nd and broadway. The normal cover is @5-10, but I don%26#39;t know about new years. I do know it is always packed, so get there before 10 or you won%26#39;t get in. One other thing, if you need a ride, the police are giving free rides until 3am, so don%26#39;t drive. Good luck and have fun.

College-age kids also frequent the bars on Demonbreun, so you might try that.

I am not positive, but I think the tickets associated with Tootsie%26#39;s are only if you go to the show at the Nashville Palace. They%26#39;re running a shuttle from Tootsie%26#39;s to the Nashville Palace all night. (No offense to my beloved honky tonks, but I can%26#39;t imagine anyone paying $50 to get into Tootsie%26#39;s.)
