There is public transportation in Memphis, but I%26#39;d say definitely stay Downtown to be at the heart of things.

Standard fare $1.40. Need to plan carefully as not always frequent service eg. 2A service daytime only hourly to/from airport and Downtown, but 43 to Graceland much more regular.
Trolley service fun for $1 for getting around within Downtown.
Taxi cabs are expensive and seem few and far between on the streets, except at the Airport, and are expensive, $29 to Marriott Downtown.
I visited Memphis for the first time last weekend from London. If you love music you really must go.
