My family and I go once or twice each year to the Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge area. We usually rent a cabin through jackson mountain homes, a rental company. They are professional and rent very nice privately owned cabin/chalets. If you call them and tell them what you are looking for they will try to help you without trying to put you in just anything to get your cash. They have a really strong business volume already.

While we almost always stay with that agency, we have been looking at Brothers Cove too for a couple of years. We are not the types to deviate from the norm so we have not taken that plunge yet. The thing I don%26#39;t like about brothers cove is it looks like an owner operator property. Mom and Pop can be a pleasant experience but it can also be a bad one. Just not too sure but I would love to hear your experience if you do stay with them.

As for the snow, I wouldnt hold my breath. You do have some elevation in Gatlinburg but not much. And it is a bit South. Snow is possible but not real common in Gatlinburg in my experience. The Ski resort is small and they will probably have sleigh riding of sorts but the resorts elevation is significantly higher that downtown Gatliburg. When I was there this summer, they had sleigh like carts that you could ride down a long concrete runway. I would assume that they take the wheels off of them in the Winter and have a blast.

If youre more interetes in the scenery and atmosphere of the ';mountains'; find a newly built cabin. If you want nice accomodations that arein the heart of the shopping / attraction district check out the resort at Governors Crossing. We rented a condo there once this year and it was gorgeous.

Good Luck

Be careful what you wish for....we just got back from a mountain (not one of the big ones, though!) cabin and can%26#39;t imagine having to drive to/from it in the snow or ice. Chances probably aren%26#39;t great that you would get snow there but you would need 4WD and/or snow chains if you did. It was beautiful though and I can%26#39;t imagine NOT staying in a mountain cabin. Went through cabinfevervacations.com. They are a reservation company for private owners, I believe, and have a ton of cabins/locations/amenities to choose from. Enjoy your stay....we WILL be going back!

Hi Treasure Coast,

It%26#39;s very hard to predict if you will have any snow at that time. But I was just in Pigeon Forge for Christmas, and my siblings and I looked at Brothers Cove for investment cabins, and the ones at the very top have spectacular views. There%26#39;s hardly a structure of any kind in sight. Their web site does say that if there is snow, your car will need chains. Having lived in Florida, I dare say that you even have an ice scraper for the windshield let alone chains. I am originally from East Tennessee, and my family never owned chains for our cars, but the elevation of these cabins would make for tricky maneuvering especially if you should experience icy rain or snow. I was very impressed with the cabins at the top of the mountain that are under construction because many of them have wrap around windows that afford unobstructed views and make it seem like you%26#39;re suspended in air.

There are several other developments that have spectacular views, e.g. Starr Crest Resorts and Timber Tops. The road up to Timber Tops can be frightening even for those of us that grew up here. It is narrow, winding, and steep. The road to Starr Crest is less narrow but still very steep. I think that if you were in a cabin at either of these developments when it snowed, you would be stuck. It would be dangerous to try to use a sled at such heights.

Ober Gatlinburg is the ski center, and our waiter at one of the restaurants that we ate at last week said that in addition to skiing there, you can snowboard and rent everything you need except sunglasses.

The chalets in Gatlinburg do have good views, but again the roads can be dangerous, and this area has accomodations that can be 20 - 40 years older than cabins in Pigeon Forge. Gatlinburg is reminiscent of a Bavarian Village and is very conducive to strolling among the shops. You will notice that there are many fudge shops and pancake shops. Try Aunt Mahalia%26#39;s for fudge and Flapjacks for pancakes.

Pigeon Forge has really exploded since I was a child. The centerpiece is Dollywood, an amusement park owned in part by Dolly Parton. I haven%26#39;t been there, but it will be closed anyway when you are there. There are lots of show venues by people like Louise Mandrell and then lesser known people. I have heard that the Black Bear Revue is good if you are with a wide age range of people. The outlet malls are very new for the most part and have a nice selection. If you stay in Pigeon Forge you can use their new community center for $5 per day and bowl, use the gym, or swim indoors. The parkway through Pigeon Forge is a wide, four lane road, and the road through Gatlinburg is just 2 lanes in some places. There is a community in Gatlinburg called Arts and Crafts that has many artists working on site. There%26#39;s a very good chance that it won%26#39;t be too cold for outside activities like putt-putt golf and go cart racing. I%26#39;m not sure if they close for part of the winter. But, for me, being in a cabin in the cold months is the best because the hot tub is so much nicer when the air around you is cold. Also all the traffic congestion of the summer months and Christmas is gone too.

I hope you won%26#39;t think I am responding to you just because I own a rental cabin with my family, but I just thought I would mention it. We just stayed there for 2 weeks during Christmas, and it was so relaxing. It is not yet a year old. It has three levels with a bedroom and bathroom on each level. The kitchen has a stove, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, blender, popcorn popper, hand mixer, dishwasher, etc. Each bed is queen sized with a pillow top mattress with an extra thick mattress pad. The downstairs gameroom has a regulation size pool table, wet bar, darts, board games, and the deck on this level has the 5 person hot tub. It is not high up on a mountain top, but it is less than a mile from the parkway in Pigeon Forge and has a lot of trees around it. The hill just in front of it has heating elements under the road to melt any ice should there be any. The web site for the rental agency that handles the bookings is Baskins Creek Vacations.

Hope you and your family enjoy yourselves. You might want to consider a day trip to Asheville, N.C. to tour Biltmore House if you have the time. Asheville has a lot of contemporary craft galleries, and the most famous is the award winning New Morning Gallery.

I took a look-see at Boulder Bear and it is indeed an awesome cabin. My husband and I love the Smokies and we have thought seriously about buying a place and putting it on the rental program. We have always loved the Highland Condominiums because of the view (national park and gatlinburg city, but we want something with our own hot tub, mountain/city views, etc. Do you have any suggestions. Also, can you actually come close to breaking even financially?

Thanks.

if you want like an overview of the weather in the area, for example, snow and whatnot, ask a local.
