My reply to a similar questions earlier:

Cracker Barrel in Pigeon Forge has an old fashioned Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Be sure to get there early as the line gets very long. I%26#39;m sure there are lots of other places as well.

Highland Gathering

Does anyone know where there will be a Scottish type highland gathering in the area? That would be fun to go to while there. I think I saw one listed somewhere as in early May I think. This sounds a bit to springish perhaps?

Highland Gathering

Thank You oh so much!!!

I will go and check out the website right now! Yippee! Gotta love this website!

Highland Gathering

I think I would enjoy the day of the games and such the best.

drive question

I always thought that Cades Cove and the National Park were the same.

Which is a more interesting drive and is it better to go early morning or late afternoon to see more animals?

drive question

Cades Cove is a part of The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, it%26#39;s on the nothwest (Townsend) side of the Park. After you cross the Smokies on 441 you%26#39;ll turn at the Sugarlands Visitor Center and travel around 20 more miles to Cades Cove.

%26lt;img src=http://www.smokiesguide.com/gsmnp/park_map.gif%26gt;

drive question

You will see more animals early morning in Cades Cove than anywhere else in the park. Overcast, damp days are good as well. The loop road through Cades Cove is open for bicycles only on Wednesdays and Saturdays from daylight to 10:00am May through Sept. Depending on when you come be prepared for lots of traffic on the loop road. Winter is the least crowded time there.

Cades Cove is part of the National Park system. My family lived in there (Parson%26#39;s Branch) until just before the Smoky Mountains park was formed back in the 1930%26#39;s.

I agree early morning is best.

When we have wanted to see the wildlife in the cove, we have gone in the evening just before they close the gate close to dusk. We pulled off on the side of the road and watched the dear march out of the woods one behind the other. I know that sounds strange, but that is what is was like. One time we saw 7 doe and 2 bucks, one behind the other, come out of the woods and leap over a fence and start feeding on the grass. But, the dear were the only animals we saw. Whenever we have been lucky enough to see a bear, it has been during the day, but not every time we go.

    weather Thurs-Sunday

Any chance of snow in the mountains??? We are doing our hiking on Saturday....just wondering how the weather will be. Maybe Mountain Man can help me here.... :)

62 hours until we leave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can%26#39;t hardly wait.

    weather Thurs-Sunday

Hi Janey, I guess it might depend on where you are planning on hiking to. I think it%26#39;s supposed to be in the mid 20%26#39;s at night for the coming weekend. My brother hiked up to LeConte last week and saw no snow, but again it%26#39;s going to be colder this weekend. Good luck with seeing some - and have a safe drive up.

    weather Thurs-Sunday

Thanks for the info!!! Being from South La., I really didn%26#39;t know what to expect...I think I bought out Academy Sport%26#39;s stock of women%26#39;s cold weather gear just to be safe!!!! LOL

    60 hours to go!!!!

The 10 forecast has snow showers on wed before Thanksgiving. We will be there hope it happens.

Foothills Mining Company - Need some feedback

Sometimes this board can get a little confusing, some like certain places, some don%26#39;t. Yes, that%26#39;s life huh?

Anyway, I have seen a couple of posters say they like this but haven%26#39;t heard too much about it.

I%26#39;m looking for someplace nice and different then we have been to. One poster said it was great but you never know if its an owner and just talkin it up or what.

Anyone been there and what%26#39;s your opinion!

    Thanks

Foothills Mining Company - Need some feedback

I haven%26#39;t been there, but will be going this Friday when my husband and I are in Gatlinburg. I received RAVE reviews on this restaurant from several people from this forum who have been there. They said the food and the service was excellent.

I will do my best to remember to comment on it next week after we get back if you want to remember my screen name and check in when I post...

Foothills Mining Company - Need some feedback

I have never heard of this restaurant, where is it?

I have never heard of it either, so I googled it and came up with a review from a different board:

    chowhound.com/south/…23018.html

The person who wrote the review loved the place.

It is actually Foothills Milling Company...(not Mining)

    Here is their website..

    http://foothillsmillingcompany.com/

They have a menu on there and it is a bit pricey.

Plus I am not a gourmet kind of gal so some of their menu is a bit too fancy for me.

Give me a good Prime Rib anytime...haha..

I was a little concerned about the %26#39;gourmet%26#39; part about the restaurant myself. But it came so highly recommended that I decided to try it. so my husband and I will be there this Friday. I%26#39;ll know soon enough and share my thoughts when we get back.

Also, I had about decided to eat at Maxwell%26#39;s on Saturday, but am now considering Cherokee with all the great posts on it. Anyone have any feedback on Maxwell%26#39;s verses Cherokee? The fireplace at Cherokee sound inviting, but I don%26#39;t know how likely we would be at getting a table near it. Any feedback on that possibility, as well?

    Thanks!

FYI, Maxwells also has a fireplace.

Thanks for the info, I will look forward to reading your review,

Thanks to the poster for the site!

We are not gourmet either, but my husband doesn%26#39;t always like to go to the same places.

We have been to Maxwells and it was really nice!

I haven%26#39;t been to Cherokee and am thinking I will try that also in Jan!

Thanks and don%26#39;t forget to post when you get home!

Boy, I just looked at the menu,

I don%26#39;t think the husband is going to go for that.

He is not a seafood eater of any kind and I think he may think its too fou fou for him.

I personally would be great but, well, I%26#39;ll be anxious to read your review!

    Airports there

What is the closest airport to Gatlinburg? Or cheapest?

    Thanks

    Airports there

Closest airport with jet service is in Knoxville (45min drive)- small market so the prices are high. Chattanooga would be the next closest at about 2.5 hours. Next would be either Atlanta or Nashville and I wouldn%26#39;t pick Atlanta if I didn%26#39;t have to. Nashville or Atlanta would be cheapest but then you would have a 3.5+hr drive to GB

    Airports there

    Thank You!

I would fly from Milwaukee to one of those.

Unfortunately flying anywhere seems awful expensive right now!

I was thinking of visiting my folks in WV for Christmas and flying there but the airfare is pretty high still.

    Tissie I feel your pain,

We are going the first week of January to GB.

The down side is it is almost $600 for our tickets(for 2) from Cleveland to Knoxville(about a 50 min drive to GB) but, the up side for us is that the cabins are way lower at that time of year. So, even though the flight is higher we are looking to get a cabin that is less then 99$ a nite.

Many of the companies and rental agencies as well as private owners will discount at low times of the year.

Not sure of when you were going but it%26#39;s a thought.

PS We flew down in Nov 2 years ago, and the flights were less then $200 per ticket. So, like everything, its going up(but totally worth every penny!)

    Thanks Lindy...

Looks like Knoxville is the best/fastest way of getting there.

Do you rent a car? If so how much do they go for?

We usually take vacations in October... perhaps because it seems a little less busy. But this year we thought we might take one earlier like near the end of May or something. But I am not sure how rates will be in May for Gatlinburg.

You didn%26#39;t say where in WI you were flying from. Independence Air is probably the cheapest service into Knoxville. I know they fly out of Chicago. Northwest is probably next cheapest.

Independence Air is hubbed out of Washington DC. I may not should be saying this but you can fly from Washington DC to Charleston WV for less than $50 per person each way. From Washington to Knoxville is about $69 per person each way I think. These rates are around the 19th of Dec. You would still have to get from Wisconsin Tissie to Washington DC but you may want to check it out or even Southwest. Not sure where all they fly from or too.

    Hi again Tissie

Yes, we do rent a car,

Personally, with gas prices we don%26#39;t rent big cars or SUVs so I am going through Priceline.

I put in the price I want to pay and then if I%26#39;m not picky about the type of car, then I will get one relatively inexpensively.

I checked yesterday and I can get one for 16 dollars a day. Thats not bad, the published rate is 22!

I know certain airports are hubs and you can get better deals on air, its just for us, that is the best we can do!

    Good luck!

PS the drive in from Knoxville is really pretty too!

I like to fly out of Milwaukee because it is closer and not as busy as Chicago O%26#39;Hare.

Southwest flies out of Midway in Chicago with is rather out of the way and not worth the low fairs usually.

When I fly to my parents house I fly US Air because they fly into Clarksburg, WV which is by my parents house. US Air is the only one that flys into Clarksburg. It stinks because I have to go Milwaukee, Chicago, Pittsburg to Clarksburg. I use to go Milwaukee straight to Pittsburg then to Clarksburg but they aren%26#39;t doing that flight anymore.

I will check out the airlines/fare for Knoxsville then.

Good the rental car fees don%26#39;t sound too bad.

I haven%26#39;t tried Priceline before, rather scared me :-)

Is 7 days too long to spend in Gatlinburg???

Well I used Expedia... did a regular search for Milwaukee to Knoxsville and the lowest price was $437??? YIKES...

Then I tried Milwaukee to Las Vegas because that is normally ';really'; cheap and it was about the same $400-$500.... insane!!!

    Mountian Loft Timeshare

Has anyone stayed here. Will be checking in on Sept 3rd for a week. Anything I need to know. Thanks

    Mountian Loft Timeshare

Yes, stay away from all timeshares.

    Mountian Loft Timeshare

Yes, tell them you just declared bankruptcy last month.

Don%26#39;t buy!! Take the freebies and just say NO! We are owners here and it is just not worth the fees/taxes. They tell ya how versatile but you can get better deals online for cabins/ect..

And they put visitors in new units and paid owners in the ';need of repair'; rooms.
