weather Thurs-Sunday

Any chance of snow in the mountains??? We are doing our hiking on Saturday....just wondering how the weather will be. Maybe Mountain Man can help me here.... :)

62 hours until we leave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can%26#39;t hardly wait.

weather Thurs-Sunday

Hi Janey, I guess it might depend on where you are planning on hiking to. I think it%26#39;s supposed to be in the mid 20%26#39;s at night for the coming weekend. My brother hiked up to LeConte last week and saw no snow, but again it%26#39;s going to be colder this weekend. Good luck with seeing some - and have a safe drive up.

weather Thurs-Sunday

Thanks for the info!!! Being from South La., I really didn%26#39;t know what to expect...I think I bought out Academy Sport%26#39;s stock of women%26#39;s cold weather gear just to be safe!!!! LOL

60 hours to go!!!!

The 10 forecast has snow showers on wed before Thanksgiving. We will be there hope it happens.

Foothills Mining Company - Need some feedback

Sometimes this board can get a little confusing, some like certain places, some don%26#39;t. Yes, that%26#39;s life huh?

Anyway, I have seen a couple of posters say they like this but haven%26#39;t heard too much about it.

I%26#39;m looking for someplace nice and different then we have been to. One poster said it was great but you never know if its an owner and just talkin it up or what.

Anyone been there and what%26#39;s your opinion!

Thanks

Foothills Mining Company - Need some feedback

I haven%26#39;t been there, but will be going this Friday when my husband and I are in Gatlinburg. I received RAVE reviews on this restaurant from several people from this forum who have been there. They said the food and the service was excellent.

I will do my best to remember to comment on it next week after we get back if you want to remember my screen name and check in when I post...

Foothills Mining Company - Need some feedback

I have never heard of this restaurant, where is it?

I have never heard of it either, so I googled it and came up with a review from a different board:

chowhound.com/south/…23018.html

The person who wrote the review loved the place.

It is actually Foothills Milling Company...(not Mining)

Here is their website..

http://foothillsmillingcompany.com/

They have a menu on there and it is a bit pricey.

Plus I am not a gourmet kind of gal so some of their menu is a bit too fancy for me.

Give me a good Prime Rib anytime...haha..

I was a little concerned about the %26#39;gourmet%26#39; part about the restaurant myself. But it came so highly recommended that I decided to try it. so my husband and I will be there this Friday. I%26#39;ll know soon enough and share my thoughts when we get back.

Also, I had about decided to eat at Maxwell%26#39;s on Saturday, but am now considering Cherokee with all the great posts on it. Anyone have any feedback on Maxwell%26#39;s verses Cherokee? The fireplace at Cherokee sound inviting, but I don%26#39;t know how likely we would be at getting a table near it. Any feedback on that possibility, as well?

Thanks!

FYI, Maxwells also has a fireplace.

Thanks for the info, I will look forward to reading your review,

Thanks to the poster for the site!

We are not gourmet either, but my husband doesn%26#39;t always like to go to the same places.

We have been to Maxwells and it was really nice!

I haven%26#39;t been to Cherokee and am thinking I will try that also in Jan!

Thanks and don%26#39;t forget to post when you get home!

Boy, I just looked at the menu,

I don%26#39;t think the husband is going to go for that.

He is not a seafood eater of any kind and I think he may think its too fou fou for him.

I personally would be great but, well, I%26#39;ll be anxious to read your review!

Airports there

What is the closest airport to Gatlinburg? Or cheapest?

Thanks

Airports there

Closest airport with jet service is in Knoxville (45min drive)- small market so the prices are high. Chattanooga would be the next closest at about 2.5 hours. Next would be either Atlanta or Nashville and I wouldn%26#39;t pick Atlanta if I didn%26#39;t have to. Nashville or Atlanta would be cheapest but then you would have a 3.5+hr drive to GB

Airports there

Thank You!

I would fly from Milwaukee to one of those.

Unfortunately flying anywhere seems awful expensive right now!

I was thinking of visiting my folks in WV for Christmas and flying there but the airfare is pretty high still.

Tissie I feel your pain,

We are going the first week of January to GB.

The down side is it is almost $600 for our tickets(for 2) from Cleveland to Knoxville(about a 50 min drive to GB) but, the up side for us is that the cabins are way lower at that time of year. So, even though the flight is higher we are looking to get a cabin that is less then 99$ a nite.

Many of the companies and rental agencies as well as private owners will discount at low times of the year.

Not sure of when you were going but it%26#39;s a thought.

PS We flew down in Nov 2 years ago, and the flights were less then $200 per ticket. So, like everything, its going up(but totally worth every penny!)

Thanks Lindy...

Looks like Knoxville is the best/fastest way of getting there.

Do you rent a car? If so how much do they go for?

We usually take vacations in October... perhaps because it seems a little less busy. But this year we thought we might take one earlier like near the end of May or something. But I am not sure how rates will be in May for Gatlinburg.

You didn%26#39;t say where in WI you were flying from. Independence Air is probably the cheapest service into Knoxville. I know they fly out of Chicago. Northwest is probably next cheapest.

Independence Air is hubbed out of Washington DC. I may not should be saying this but you can fly from Washington DC to Charleston WV for less than $50 per person each way. From Washington to Knoxville is about $69 per person each way I think. These rates are around the 19th of Dec. You would still have to get from Wisconsin Tissie to Washington DC but you may want to check it out or even Southwest. Not sure where all they fly from or too.

Hi again Tissie

Yes, we do rent a car,

Personally, with gas prices we don%26#39;t rent big cars or SUVs so I am going through Priceline.

I put in the price I want to pay and then if I%26#39;m not picky about the type of car, then I will get one relatively inexpensively.

I checked yesterday and I can get one for 16 dollars a day. Thats not bad, the published rate is 22!

I know certain airports are hubs and you can get better deals on air, its just for us, that is the best we can do!

Good luck!

PS the drive in from Knoxville is really pretty too!

I like to fly out of Milwaukee because it is closer and not as busy as Chicago O%26#39;Hare.

Southwest flies out of Midway in Chicago with is rather out of the way and not worth the low fairs usually.

When I fly to my parents house I fly US Air because they fly into Clarksburg, WV which is by my parents house. US Air is the only one that flys into Clarksburg. It stinks because I have to go Milwaukee, Chicago, Pittsburg to Clarksburg. I use to go Milwaukee straight to Pittsburg then to Clarksburg but they aren%26#39;t doing that flight anymore.

I will check out the airlines/fare for Knoxsville then.

Good the rental car fees don%26#39;t sound too bad.

I haven%26#39;t tried Priceline before, rather scared me :-)

Is 7 days too long to spend in Gatlinburg???

Well I used Expedia... did a regular search for Milwaukee to Knoxsville and the lowest price was $437??? YIKES...

Then I tried Milwaukee to Las Vegas because that is normally ';really'; cheap and it was about the same $400-$500.... insane!!!

Mountian Loft Timeshare

Has anyone stayed here. Will be checking in on Sept 3rd for a week. Anything I need to know. Thanks

Mountian Loft Timeshare

Yes, stay away from all timeshares.

Mountian Loft Timeshare

Yes, tell them you just declared bankruptcy last month.

Don%26#39;t buy!! Take the freebies and just say NO! We are owners here and it is just not worth the fees/taxes. They tell ya how versatile but you can get better deals online for cabins/ect..

And they put visitors in new units and paid owners in the ';need of repair'; rooms.

Favorite Souvenir

What is the one thing you buy as a souvenir?

Everywhere I go I buy a small print and have it framed when I get home. My computer room is quite small and the walls are getting filled up with pictures of places we%26#39;ve been. I love them and enjoy looking at them and they bring back memories.

Favorite Souvenir

I love Christmas Ornaments. I have them from everywhere we have been.

Favorite Souvenir

Msparkyace, that%26#39;s a wonderful idea! Pictures are the best way to keep the memory alive. I have started getting magnets with pictures of the places we have visited. They are small, but still have pictures to remember the places by. The disadvantage, though, is that they must go on the fridge, which gets cluttered after a while. Maybe I should get some of that paint to paint the wall with that holds magnets. Then I could switch my magnets to my extra bedroom where the computer is. I have heard it is very expensive, though...

I collect shot glasses and everywhere I go I always buy a few. I think I have about 10 different ones just from Gatlinburg alone. I have shelves in my kitchen from the floor to the ceiling and they are full. I also collect Santa Clauses especially the Old World type.I also have a collection of wolves. I have bought several from the Smokies. I know this sounds kind of odd but I just like wolves.I have several framed prints of wolves in my living room.

I had alot of Lee Roberson%26#39;s prints but lost most of them in the flood. I am gonna have to start buying more!!!! I also take the kids to the Christmas place in PF and let them pic an ornament every year. I date it and put it in a box for them. When they grow up they will have all of them to take when they move out!!

Ah, yes! The %26#39;new dated Christmas ornament every year%26#39; thing... This is my 25th year doing that. My first year consisted of ornaments given to me when I married (a month before Christmas) and then I started buying them myself after that. I bought all three of my girls a very special baby ornament the years they were born with the promise that when they grew up and left home and began having Christmas of their own, they could have their respective ornaments to keep. The problem is that now that the first is grown and gone and the second is almost there herself, I find I am having trouble letting go! After all, I have had them on my tree for close to 25 years and my tree wouldn%26#39;t be the same without them. I%26#39;m working on it and my oldest has been very sweet, understanding my sentimentality! So the lesson here for anyone else that is doing that is to make no promises!!

I have been to the Christmas shop in PF and I loved it! I won%26#39;t be there this trip, though. My husband and I are going to try our best to be tied up in as little traffic as possible! It will make for a much happier weekend since my husband doesn%26#39;t handle sitting in traffic with much patience very well!!!

With me it%26#39;s stuffed black bears. Some small wood carvings ( chainsaw ) and any little figurine of black bears. I like woodsy things. I can%26#39;t help myself. But I also like the christmas ornaments. I Love , Love , Love the christmas stores. That%26#39;s where I get in trouble with my husband. As we%26#39;ve been packing to move. My husband finally realized how much holiday stuff I have. ( I usually try and sneak it by him ) LOL. He told me I could open up a christmas store with all the stuff I have bought over the years. But it%26#39;s not just christmas. You see in a few weeks I will be 44 and I am a big kid at heart when it comes to the holidays ALL holidays. I guess it has to do with my parents making them the most special times of the year. Now I am a grandmother. And I try to make it specail for my grandchildren like I did my own Children. Sorry I veered of course. But all of those things that bring back memories of the smokies and child hood experiences are good.

Vickie

Good Morning vickie,

You said you were packing to move? Does that mean that your house has finally sold? I know you are so looking forward to life in the Smokies and I hope someday to be there also. It grows on you and when you leave you just have this empty, sick feeling inside. I wish you and your husband the best of luck. Take care and Happy Thanksgiving in advance.

My Husband always buys me something at the Thomas Kinkade Art Gallery when we visit Gatlinburg. I always take lots of pictures while on vacation and make a scrapbook when I get home. I%26#39;m starting to collect boyds bears from Pigeon Forge now.

Well Brenda2...... We had a bite on the house. Turns out they can%26#39;t afford it. We are so heart broken. We have it for sale by owner. We had an agent who was looking for these people. She is extremely nice and fell in love with our house. She thought it would be the perfect house for these people. She was so disappointed. She felt so bad she said she would continue to try and find us a buyer anyway. Please continue to keep us in your prayers and your fingers crossed for us. I wanted to be there for the holidays. I want to give you my e-mail address. Maybe one day when we both make it there you and I can go and have a nice cup of coffee and laugh about this whole thing. My husband is so upset. He thought this was it! well anyway....my e-mail address is purplebutterfly38105@yahoo.com I look forward to hearing from you. And Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well. Thank you so much for your consern for us.

Vickie

P.S

Yeah we started packing because we have so much to pack. Maybe it will all work out

Mountainloft resort vs Laurel Crest????

Has anyone visited either the Mountainloft resort in Gatlinburg or Laurel Crest resort in Pigeon Forge? I am trying to plan a vacation there for next August and I am not sure which location is better. I also have a 5 %26amp; 8 year old kids. Any information would be appreciated.

Mountainloft resort vs Laurel Crest????

Are you a Bluegreen member? Is so you may want to also check the TUG forums. If not, then my suggetion is MountainLoft is nicer. If you looking for a mtn experience and want to be in Gatlinburg most of the time. If you want to be in PF, then go to Laurel Crest. Laurel Crest is more condo style with lots of parking lots. But it is in PF. I don%26#39;t know if you have ever been to either Gatlinburg or PF but the one problem with that area is the traffic !!!! Plan on doing a lot of walking. The two towns are not that many miles apart, but at the wrong time of year or day it could take you 2 hrs between the 2 towns. Don%26#39;t get me wrong, great family fun. Warning though PF is a ';dry'; town. No achohol. If that is an issue. Lots to do.

Mountainloft resort vs Laurel Crest????

As Bluegreen Owners, we like Mt. Loaf better. The clubhouse is nicer and bigger and the whole resort is quieter. We also like Gatlinburg better than Pigeon Forge. Almost everything is in walking distance.

  • Bracelets on Beale?

First trip to Beale in a few weeks. A few friends mentioned that they bought bracelets a year ago that allowed them into clubs/bars without paying a door charge. They thought they got scammed at first, but found that the bracelets worked. Is it worth it to purchase these?

    Bracelets on Beale?

Yes, it is worth the price. You pay $10-15 bucks and you can get in any of the nightclubs and restaurants on Beale. You can purchase the wristbands at the door of Rum Boogie Cafe!

    cabins close to downtown

Does anyone know of cabins that are walking distance of downtown Gatlilnburg?

    cabins close to downtown

Check VRBO.com ';Le Beau Chalet'; and Mountain Rentals of Gatlinburg. We haven%26#39;t used these cabins, but you might find what you are looking for.

    cabins close to downtown

    Hi Manda61075,

Gburggal, a frequent poster here, has two nice cabins just above the aquarium. I think you could walk to town, but coming back is another story ;-) Well cared for and good rates. I think you%26#39;ll find her cabins listed as #64 and #65 with Alpine Chalet rentals.

Thank you both for the help! Maybe out of all those I can find something! Im afraid I might have waited to late though. Its for New Years!

    gatlinburg wedding chapels

We had booked and planned our April wedding at Honeymoon Hills. What a disappointment! We were charged additional fees when we arrived, (charges that were%26#39;nt mentioned on-line or when we spoke to the proprietors on the phone), the lady who runs the chapel and resort was RUDE! My wedding experience was just about ruined. The cabin was nice, but the area off the balcony was littered with trash.

    gatlinburg wedding chapels

I am so sorry to hear you wedding didn%26#39;t happen has planned. I am however glad you posted about it. My daughter is planning a Nov 06 wedding and I have been researching for about a month now and I will surely mark that one off my list and pass the info on to other wedding forums.

    gatlinburg wedding chapels

Sorry about your wedding. If anyone is still trying to decide where to get married,I got married at Chapel in the Glen.It was great. The chapel is rustic but very pretty, the grounds were beautiful and the owners were very nice. We got a package that included everything except your clothes. It is near the entrance to the Arts and Crafts community, in Gatlinburg but not on the main strip. We liked the fact that it was more woods and not on the strip. I would recommend it to anyone.

I will only address the Fall/Winter season, but the highest rates for cabins and hotels are Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. Then it cools ....way-off... until late spring.

    GBG

    Cabin rates for christmas

From all of the research we have done, ANY Holiday, but it seems like the previous poster said, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Newyears are PEAK time.

We are going from Jan 2-6 and some places were still charging holiday rate for the 2nd.

That can be up to $100 more per NIGHT!

Obviously we aren%26#39;t going with any of them!

If you do go at that time, you will love it down there. It is beautiful with all of the lighting etc!

Thanks everyone.....I am just looking for the best deal I can find. Who is%26#39;nt? LOL. I would like to go for christmas because most all of my family won%26#39;t be here. Still haven%26#39;t sold our house and I thought it would be a perfect time to go and dream.

  • entertainment recommendations?

My family is making our first trip to the Smokies. We have 3 children ages 21 to 27 accompanying us. This is our first time being all together in a few years I am scouting out the best entertainment options. We will be there December 23-26. Can anyone recommend any particular shows to see?

    entertainment recommendations?

The Aquarium isn%26#39;t a show, but is a definite must for all ages. Sweet Fannie Adams would also be a good choice. A trolly ride to view all of the Christmas lights would be my 1st. priority. Have a great time!!

    entertainment recommendations?

Be sure and check out BlackBear jamboree. It,s a good meal and a great show.

    Greg

Went to the Comedy Barn (Pigeon Forge) in October and it was good clean family fun. The Aquarium in Gatlinburg is a must see.

The Aquarium is nice but with Atlanta opening up a new aquarium it%26#39;s gonna put Ripleys to shame.

I always like Dixie Stampede for dinner and a show.

We try and avoid anything with Ripley%26#39;s in the name. Very touresty.

I LOVE the Comedy Barn! There is alot of audience participation so you never know what is going to happen. My husband is a bah humbug when it comes to shows, He laughed so hard at this one he cried. I also love Dollywood but don%26#39;t know if it will be open that time of year.

I love the comedy barn as well....but another good dinner and a show is Dixie Stampede. They have an awsome show.

I can%26#39;t think of any reason to go to Atlanta, so I will just continue to visit Ripleys Aquarium. It is great fun for all ages.

    New with Winterfest?

For those of you who are locals or ones that have been to Gatlinburg,PF,or Dollywood this year, is there any new lights displays or different things at Dollywood?

    homemade quilts?

I want to buy my mother a handmade quilt for christmas and am going to be in gatlinburg for a weekend, any ideas the best place to start looking

    homemade quilts?

What a nice idea. I am sure there are many of the regular poasters that can help you more than me, but I%26#39;ll share what I know.

There is a shop in the Arts and Crafts Community called: Mountain Stitches by Susan. I have not been there but it says that she makes all the quilts in her shop. Go to: http://www.artsandcraftscommunity.com/ for more information.

I believe there is a place out in Cosby too.

I know there are shops in downtown Gatlinburg that have quilts but I do not know if they are handmade.

In Townsend, at the Visitor Center they frequently have quilts by a woman named Joyce Jarman. She is probably local. If you call the Visitor Center at: 865-448-6134 or 800-525-6834 they might be able to help you find her. There used to be (haven%26#39;t seen it lately) a woman who sold quilts on 321 right outside of Townsend, hanging on a line. Maybe that is Joyce, I do not know. Hope that helps some.

How far is Pigeon Forge to Gatlingburg?

How far is Pigeon Forge to Gatlingburg?

How far is Pigeon Forge to Gatlingburg?

    Maybe 6 miles at most.

How far is Pigeon Forge to Gatlingburg?

Where is the best place to get a cabin around that area? Or does it matter?

I was thinking closer to Gatlinburg but it seems Pigeon Forge isn%26#39;t that far away though.

Since I am from the area and have family there I have no experience with cabins. I do know there are a lot of them- maybe even too many now for the market. I%26#39;m sure there are lots of people who can help you with this. You should place another post with the subject of cabin rentals and you will get lots of help.

We rented through Sunset Cottages - they have cabins all over the entire area and their customer service was wonderful! Ours was just outside of Piegeon Forge - and it was perfect...the drive to Gatlinburg was nothing...and I think we had some of the best mountain views available! Their website is www.sunsetcottage.com. And we rented ';A Walk in The Clouds';.

    Hi again Tissie,

Well this the debate everytime we go to the area(been there 6 time in the last6 years!)

    Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg?

It depends on what you think you will do the most. We like to go to the outlets etc and alot of the shopping is up towards PF as well as most of the shows. Dollywood is also up there. There is a movie theater in Sevierville also(don%26#39;t know that you care about that though). There are a ton of places to eat and lots of shops and things to do.

Now, if you like to park and walk around alot and eat some more great food and have more of a ';small town feel'; then GB is a good choice. Some of the best places to eat are in GB as well as alot of touristy things as well.

We decided to stay in PF close to where you get on the parkway so it will kind of be 1/2 way for either. Not sure if it matters either, but PG is a dry county so if you like drinks with dinner or just want some for your cabin, you%26#39;ll have to go into GB.

All of the times we have stayed, we end up spending equal time at each but ususally spend dinners in GB cuz some of the best is there and we like drinks with our dinner!

Not sure if this helps but I tried.

As for lodging, OH MAN, there is a ton everywhere. We are renting from a private owner and I do think the service CAN be better!(Just my oh so humble opinion!)

Thanks to all! You guys are very helpful!

It sounds like somewhere between PF and GB would be best. They both sound like they have much to offer!

    Need Vacation Ideas...

    Hello everyone!

I have been chatting on the Oahu, Hawaii forum for about the last year! I finally visited Oahu for a week this month and it was beautiful!

Now I am on to my next vacation and I am looking for ideas!

My husband suggested Gatlinburg because it is beautiful and a fun place. However, we are thinking about starting a family here in the near future so I am wondering if I should visit some place big like the United Kingdom, Ireland, Alaska or something like that now or go low key and visit Gatlinburg this time around and save some money and maybe go some place big later. Silly eh! If my hubby is offering to pay for a big trip you think I would jump all over it eh! However, at the same time I think a nice quiet place in America would be pretty nice too.

    What do you all think?

    Need Vacation Ideas...

If you haven%26#39;t been to Cancun, go there! I love it and go there every year. My husband won a trip to Oahu and I am now researching it.

    Need Vacation Ideas...

A lot of people say Cancun is really great... but I just haven%26#39;t got myself to buy into the idea of it. That I just have been to Oahu so I don%26#39;t know what could be better than that

:-) And I don%26#39;t think I am one of those people that has to be on a beach and in paradise on every vacation.

If you want quiet I would pick Townsend over Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Townsend is considered the quiet side of the Smokies.

Well I just don%26#39;t want my cabin right next to someone elses cabin... that takes away the whole point of the trip you know. I don%26#39;t mind being close to town but I would like a little privacy.

Most of the cabins are fairly close together but I%26#39;m sure there are some that are a little more private. The problem with having something that%26#39;s not constantly inhabited and is isolated is break-ins, theft and vandalism.

Well that does make a lot of sense!

My husband and I are going to Gatlinburg/PF for our anniversary on 11/19. We are only staying 2 nights and would love to get the very most out of our time. Our big goal is to have some quiet time from the kids and just enjoy the scenery and Christmas lights. But of course we want to eat at some good places also.

For all of you Gatlinburg/PF lovers, what is the must dos for us to enjoy. We are so excited about the trip!

    1st time visitors

Thats awesome, y%26#39;all will love the mountains.

My husband and I love going to the mountains and one of our favorite places to eat is actually a dinner show its called the Dixie Stampede its so neat you get a full course meal and a show. They menu consists of a whole rotisserie chicken, hickory smoked bbq pork loin, creamy vegetable soup, homemade biscuits, corn on the cob, herb-basted potatoe, and a dessert and unlimited pepsi, tea or coffe. They also have a vegetarin menu. you should go to www.mypigeonforge.com and for gatlinburg www.gatlinburg.com. I hope y%26#39;all have a great time.

    1st time visitors

Well first time visitor, we just got back from our 24th annual anniversary trip to this area. We stay with private owners Julie and Jay at All Seasons Cabins(www.allseasonscabins.com), right off the parkway in Pigeon Forge for wooded privacy in their unbelievable cabins(wood burning fireplace, hot tub, jacuzzi, pool table, King bed, BBQ grill,etc....) but we are close enough to drive into all surrounding areas to take in the Smoky Mountains. We have enjoyed riding down 321 to Townsend and picnicing at Cades Cove, Driving up 321 from Gatlinburg and picnicing at Greenbrier next to the rushing river, riding the 8 mile Arts and Crafts loop up 321, Parking for the day in Gatlinburg and walking the streets full of shops and attractions, Taking a day trip through the Mountains and driving down to Cherokee. We love breakfast at places offering buffets like Duffs in PF. We play putt putt golf for some fun competition or pool at our cabin. We rode horses up the mountain at the Ponderosa Riding Stables(Traffic light 10 in PF). Late night music and drinks at the Brewery up town in Galinburg. Wine tasting at PF and Gat. The shows that we really enjoyed this time were Country Tonight- 3rd time, Comedy Barn -2nd time, and the Blackbear Jamboree dinner and show was THE BEST. Their Christmas show has started now. In all these years we were too busy to get to Dollywood but I understand they have millions of lights up this year. When all else fails we can always shop the outlets in PF and Sevierville. W spend 5 days there and we can never get it all done. Then after all of this we settle in by our cozy fireplace or in the hot tub with steaks on the grill and a glass of newly-purchased wine to relax from a full day of soaking up the Smokys. Tips: Pull up websites of shows and attractions for discounts and seasonal schedules and special events. Stop by the visitor centers or grab info books with coupons found all over the place. Avoid timeshare tours cause their 90 minute presentation for tickets and dinner usually means 3 hours and you don%26#39;t have time for this. Have a wonderful anniversary trip. Our next anniversary is a year away and I am already looking so forward to it.

    Hello 1 time visitors!!

A must for you is Dixie Stampede and dinner show, sort of expensive, but well worth it considering you get a wonderful meal and very talented entertainment!!! try for the 6 pm show (parking is horrible at 8 pm show) but do make reservations!!! then after the show, ride to Gatlinburg and see the lights, then ride thru PF and Seiverville but allow some time for this (2 hours!??!) cause traffic is heavy.

a good daytime option is a drive thru Cades Cove, an 11-mile, one way loop rode through the mountains. You actually feel like you step back in history a hundred years. You will see settler%26#39;s cabins, churches, etc. and also many deer, horses, possibly turkeys, fox, hawks, and we have seen bear, but not every time. Take a picnic lunch and cooler, cause to really take time and savor the trip, you need 3-4 hours, and there are no commercial businesses in Cades Cove. then come back to your cabin or room and unwind in the hot tub and then cuddle in front of the fire!!! Have fun and enjoy. We just got back 2 weeks ago, and I am already ready to go again!

You have wonderful suggestions. I did make reservations for the 6:00 Dixie Stampede. I hope to follow your other ideas as well. Thank you!

We visit this area at least once a year with our three daughters. We have also been on three anniversary trips alone. I would reccommend Alamo in Gatlinburg (better than the one in Pigeon Forge) It is a little expensive but there are area coupons and I have been told, if you dine during earlier hours it is cheaper. Our very favorite place to eat is Cracker Barrell. This is also a great place to get coupons. Also, if you love apple pie, go to the Apple Barn in Sevierville. We love thier old fashioned two crust apple pie, and they also have a winery with wonderful apple strawberry wine and other varieties. I hope you have a great trip!!!

    Alamo

For a real good steak the Alamo on 321 is hard to beat.

Sorry this was suppose to be a reply to good places to eat.

    Moving to Knoxville

We live in Hercules, CA 20 miles away from San Francisco, CA and are thinking about moving to the Knoxville area.

Cost of living in the Bay Area keeps going up every year, traffic is pretty bad, and public schools are not that great anymore, commuting to the city takes about 1 1/2 hours each way and toll for bridges are currently $3 each way. Gas prices as of today (11/6/05) is $2.69

The only good thing about living here is the weather, plenty of outdoor activities, excellent food and cultural museums and activities. However everything else is very expensive.

We have a small publishing company, and work from home, we can conduct our business from anywhere in the country, since we only talk to our customers on the phone, and we sell via the internet and catalogs.

We DON%26#39;T HAVE TO COMMUTE to downtown, or be near big cities, our main concern is good schools, we have a 2yr-old daughter.

We%26#39;re looking for a house in the $150-$250K range.

How%26#39;s the weather like in Knoxville?, what are the best places to live? how about schools and outdoor activities?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

    Moving to Knoxville

JR, you might want to do a search on just the Knoxville posts from the last few months. You can do that by clicking on the ';select forum'; button to search for the city. Several people have been asking the very same questions you have lately and you can get a lot of information from those posts.

You might also go over to Fodors.com to their message boards and do a search for Knoxville. Even more information can be found there.

Briefly, Knoxville weather is pretty mild. Not much snow or ice. Summers can get hot and humid. The fall is amazing in terms of fall color in the nearby mountains.

I personally think the west side of Knoxville has more to offer in terms of housing (lots of new construction) and schools. The Farragut area is pretty good. You might also check out Oakridge and Maryville in addition to just Knoxville proper.

As for outdoor activities, hiking, fishing and boating are very popular. Do be aware that Univ. of Tennessee football draws enormous crowds during the fall.

But to be honest, a trip to Knoxville to see it all for yourself is the best thing to do. My husband is from there and I always enjoy visiting my in-laws. It%26#39;s a great place.

    Moving to Knoxville

    JRAIMEE,

The Knoxville area is one of the best

places to raise a child. My wife and I are both from here but met while living in Atlanta. We were fortunate to move back here before we had our daughter. The Maryville/Alcoa school systems in

Blount county are excellant as are the west knox schools. Housing is reasonable especially compared to San Fran. Come visit knoxville in the spring or fall and you will never want to leave.

    Good Luck

    Boyd's bear country store???

I have heard about this store and that is a must see. But where is it? PF or Gatlinburg? Then whereabouts once in the right town? What is so great about it? What is the big attraction? I have a 9 yr old girl that just LOVES stuffed animals! Any info would be wonderful. thx

    Boyd's bear country store???

    Hi Mary,

The Boyd%26#39;s Barn is in Pigeon Forge up on the left up on the hill as your leaving PF heading towards Gatlinburg on the Parkway.

We spent all morning one day back in the summer. Your 9 year will love it, mine did.

    Please, please, please any info

I will be in Gatlinburg the first weekend in December , staying an the Laurel Springs Lodge. We don%26#39;t really want to move our car after we are there and just wondering about close restaurants, don%26#39;t need one for breakfast, because I hear the Lodge has a great one, just thing close by to do. I also know that the Christmas Parade is that weekend and wondered if it is worth watching. Thanks for any input.

    Please, please, please any info

thanks mountain man for the quick reply, i will definitely be at the parade, we were there last year at parade time and we let the crowd deter us and we left and didn%26#39;t watch the whole thing, but i think this year we will get some hot chocolate and a good seat and enjoy

    Please, please, please any info

    Best Western Music Row?

    Hi

I%26#39;ve booked 4 nights at the Best Western Music row in April next year. My son lives in a small appartment near Vanderbilt and this seems the best budget hotel nearby. I%26#39;m travelling with my other son and he will stay in the flat so I will be in the hotel alone I%26#39;ve read the reviews on this hotel and they vary from disgusting to brilliant. Any feedback about the place or any other ideas of a decent budget hotel in this area would be gratefully received.

By the way thanks for all the advice last year for my son%26#39;s graduation, I stayed at the Hampton Inn Briley Parkway and it was lovely. Clean rooms, good breakfast and helpful staff.

    Thanks

    Jackie

    Best Western Music Row?

Has nobody any views on this hotel?

    Jackie

    Best Western Music Row?

Hi Jackie - I have not stayed there, but I can tell you where the review are on this board.

On this page over to the left and up a little is the title ';Nashville'; in green. Underneath that heading click on ';Nashville Hotels';. That will take you to a listing of hotels in Nashville. In the left column, scroll down to the ';Deals on Nasville Hotels'; in the blue box. Continue to scroll down (almost exactly half way on the page) until you see the Best Western Music Row. Click on it, and your reviews will come up. I don%26#39;t know it that is the easiest way to get to the reviews, but it is the only way I know. Hope that helps.

    Smokiesgrl

Hi, Jackie! So you%26#39;re coming back to Nashville. That%26#39;s wonderful. I hope your son is doing well and enjoying his post-college life. We%26#39;re living in Atlanta now but I try to check back here from time to time.

I%26#39;ve never stayed at the Best Western you mention. So I can%26#39;t really help you there.

If you%26#39;re looking into other hotels nearby, I used to stay at the Guest House Inn on Hayest St., which isn%26#39;t that far from Vanderbilt. Mind you, it is not fancy. It%26#39;s an older hotel. But it is clean and comfortable, and there%26#39;s a microwave/mini fridge in every room. I never had a problem when I stayed there.

    Here%26#39;s their Web site:

    http://www.nashvilleguesthouseinn.com

There%26#39;s a Mexican restaurant next door, Las Palmas, that serves good margaritas. It%26#39;s popular with students and locals alike.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Peachyswan

My son is doing very well thanks, and is back at college doing his masters. The only way he can stay in the US is to study, so I guess he will never leave school. At least he%26#39;s paying for it all now himself.

This time we%26#39;re staying 4 nights in the centre of Nashville and so hope to see a lot more and then it%26#39;s onto New York for 5 nights.

I%26#39;ve checked out all the reviews on the Best Western and they vary, but I will look up the one you recomend. As usual for me a lot of the final decision is based on price.

Nice to hear from you again and I hope you%26#39;re enjoying life in Atlanta, I%26#39;ve only been to the airport but that seemed very nice:)

    Take care

    Jackie

hi i stayed at this hotel with my fiancee during halloween weekend,i am from uk and she is from illinois and we went to see raiders v titans, anyway the hotel to us was terrible,we had a king size bed with a couch bed too and only 3 small pillows,i requested extra pillows at 10.30 pm and was told they would be sent up after 11,i waited til 12.30 am and called reception, they told me there were no more pillows available so i would have to make do,the room was not very clean and the service was terrible, they even charged me wrong for the room and i had to send my receipt to head office for them to investigate,i love nashville and we are planning on marrying there but if you want some advice try doubletree instead, they have great hotels,i hope this helps, have fun

  • ICE? Looking for opinions on this attraction.

Is this something worth going to and paying for? It sounds interesting but would like to hear from someone who has gone. Thanks

ICE? Looking for opinions on this attraction.

I went last year and it was very interesting. It is amazing what can be done with ice.

    Leaving tonight for the mountains

Our bags are packed and ready by the door. My husband will load the car today and we will leave about 3 in the morning. We will be in Townsend on Saturday night to celebrate our 29th anniversary. We will stay at Comfort Inn in Townsend and on Sunday will go to PIgeon Forge.I can%26#39;t wait to smell the mountain air and see the blue smoke.

    Leaving tonight for the mountains

    Have Fun !!!!!!!!!!!!

Please be sure and let us know about your trip.

    Leaving tonight for the mountains

Have a wonderful time and drive safely.

Looking forward to your reviews when you return.

    It's Time!

We%26#39;re off to Gatlinburg about 10am. I%26#39;m really excited. My husband even seems ready to go and he doesn%26#39;t usually get excited about anything. I%26#39;ll let you know how our weekend went when we get back.

    Kathy

    It's Time!

I am sure you are there by now and having a wonderful time. Be sure and get back with us on your reviews of where you stayed and what you did.

    Weather during Thanksgiving, Nov. 22-26.

I just looked at the 10 day forecast and it said that there are going to be snow showers down in Gatlinburg on the night we are leaving (Tues the 22nd) and I am really concerned. We live in Indiana and we are supposed to get snow showers that night here too, but I didn%26#39;t think about getting them that early down further south. I am concerned because the cabin we are renting is up in the mountains and it says that it winter, with the snow, that you need 4 WD, or chains and we don%26#39;t have either one!! Should I be worried?? I am already concerned about bears! I guess I am just worried...I am VERY excited too, but just concerned I guess.

Thanks in advance for any info.

This is my first time posting on here too! There is a lot of good information on this site.

    Weather during Thanksgiving, Nov. 22-26.

You should be fine. You can never tell but we will get there Tue night also. Not worried about it. Maybe mt man can help with this one?

    Weather during Thanksgiving, Nov. 22-26.

If anybody can get a 10 day forecast right, they need to be a %26#39;player%26#39; in Las Vegas!

#1 BEARS you wont see any unless you disturb them in their rest.

#2 Gatlinburg gets snow (and already has) in the higher elevations. The snow you normally get in the town area is little accumlation and melts by noon the next day. I will say, that if your desination is up, ie: Ski Mt etc and you get snow, you might need 4WD or chains. Does not happen often.

This is not Colorado, Buffalo or Michigan. Think about your vacation and stop worrying about the weather. I have spent many years flying into the area and rarely had a flight delay associated with weather in the winter.

Have a great trip and enjoy it all...don%26#39;t worry.

    GBG

You need to keep up the %26#39;excited%26#39; side and pass on the %26#39;worried%26#39; side. You%26#39;ll be fine.

    Family friendly?

What do you all recommend for the family in terms of cabin rentals around Gatlinburg? Looking for a post Christmas getaway.

    Family friendly?

    Hi Jazzymama,

What week(s) are you looking at? Post Christmas (as in Dec. 26) or more like early January?

Cabins are filling up fast for the holidays. Both mine have been rented through Jan. 1 for a few weeks now. In January you%26#39;ll find a lot more choices and really great prices. It all depends what you are looking for.

Also what are you looking for in the way of family-friendly? Competitive prices...no stairs; one level with a large, open living area...game room...big kitchen and dining area...lots of activities at the cabin...a cabin that welcomes pets, etc?

Maybe with some clarification we can help you better. Thanks :)

2 Germans, 1st time in USA - where to stay, eat...

My mother%26#39;s cousin and his wife are coming to the USA for the first time. I am the designated coordinator for our week long trip to Nashville and Memphis. I need major help! I have never been to Nashville and I have no idea where to stay. What is a good area? Where is a good hotel? They want to see the Grand Ole Opry and places like that. I prefer to stay at the hotel and drink. Any ideas are very much appreciated.

    Thank you.

2 Germans, 1st time in USA - where to stay, eat...

    Hi Boser.

I am Scottish and have been to Nashville 5 times, and like you I enjoy the odd beer. i dont know what kind of budget you are on but a very good hotel is the Hilton suites downtown and you will be next to some great bars and you will also get loads of information on the things to do in Nashville. I love the people there and always feel very welcome. The saying of southern hospitality is not a mith they are lovely people so you go and have a great time and let us know how you got on.

    Billy.

2 Germans, 1st time in USA - where to stay, eat...

I usually pick hotel for location and view.

The rennasiance and sheraton are high rise hotels with an amazing view.

I read that the sheraton has poor customer service and the rennasiance has paper thin walls where you can hear noisy people next door, but who knows.

If you do stay there, get a room facing north so you can see the capitol, or west to see the sunset.

Just stay in the downtown area or on west end next to vanderbilt. Opryland is 5 miles away from the action.

    Hi,

Stayed at the Renaissance a month ago - we found it to be a great hotel with great views, and great service. I had read the same thing about the thin walls but found there was no problem. There%26#39;s a restaurant near the Opry that has an aquarium that was surprisingly good(we thought it would be bad due to its family friendly motiff). We also went to a tapa place near Vanderbilt that was quite good, don%26#39;t remember the name.

Boser, A must for any German coming to Tennessee is a trip to Lynchburg for a tour of the Jack Daniel%26#39;s distillery.

The downtown Hilton is really nice, but high and no free internet access. Don%26#39;t go to Eddie%26#39;s sports bar the food is sorry. You might look into the Doubletree only 4-5 blocks off Broadway.

    Have fun.

Thank you everyone for your trip tips.

    I appreciate it very much.

    Thanks again,

    Boser

  • Thanksgiving

My family(Grandmother- 63, mother- 42, brother- 21, and me- 15) have been trying to think of what to do for Thanksgiving. Though we live in Knoxville, none of us have spent much time in Gatlinburg, especially not the city itself, and just have visited the mountains once, maybe twice. We all have different tastes, but none of us are interested in arts and crafts or country music. My brother doesn%26#39;t enjoy ';country living'; much so more modern themed suggestions would be appreciated (no horse rides, or historal things) . Any suggestions will be a great help for us to enjoy our first Thanksgiving since my father died. Thanks a lot for your help.

Please keep in mind that the grandmother can not walk very well.

    Thanks much.

    Thanksgiving

    You should visit the Aquarium.

    Thanksgiving

....and sorry to hear about the loss of your father, know this must be a tough time for everyone.

    govol101:

    I feel your pain. My father left us recently and he loved Gatlinburg. My brother-in-law left us 5 days ago and G%26#39;burg was his %26#39;high%26#39;

You don%26#39;t need to go there to entertain yourself, make it for the feeling of being together in a special place. Hold hands, walk the town....cook out...have a picnic in the Park...just being together and this place seems to be a special %26#39;bonding%26#39; place, for some reason! Gatlinburg brought our family (from many States) together every year for many years. It became very special. A cousin printed T-Shirts, another made up photo shots and printed pencils.

Start a family reunion there. Make it a %26#39;gathering spot%26#39; where everybody gets together and can go off and do their own thing.

Bless you and good luck !

    Hotel Reccomendation

My wife and I are in need of a hotel reccommendation. We want to stay on the parkway (stayed in an awesome cabin last time, but too expensive to do it again right now) so we can be within walking distance of many attractions.

Requirements: King Size bed, Fridge, Microwave, room to put a pack %26amp; play for our 1 year old son. Fireplace would be a huge plus.

I don%26#39;t want to spend more than 100 a night, otherwise I%26#39;ll get a cabin. We%26#39;re planning on coming December 4th-8th.

    Any ideas?

    Hotel Reccomendation

    Thanks, I%26#39;ll check them out!

Has anyone stayed at the Quality Inn Creekside?

Riverhouse at The Park has a big room with king sized bed, microwave, fridge, gas fireplace on the river plus a continental breakfast that has good donuts and fresh squeezed orange juice. The rates are great at the time you%26#39;re going, 50 a night. Bearskin Lodge is another nice place to stay.

hi! we were looking for something reasonable also and found windy oaks condo 311. It%26#39;s walking distance to downtown Gatlinburg. It%26#39;s left onlight 6 (across from aquarium) half mile up the hill. Newly remodeled. 3 bedroom, very very nice!!! Deb493

hi! we were looking for something reasonable also. we found windy oaks condo 311. It%26#39;s left at light 6 in downtown gatlinburg, half mile up the hill. newly remodeled. soooooooooo nice!! 125.00 + 35.00 cleaning fee. no taxes. cheaper than motel! 3 br/ 3bath!!!!! Deb493

We were in the area two weekends ago. Do Not stay at the Best Western Greenbrier Inn, located at 711 Parkway. This is Not a family friendly motel! The rooms are all very small, have paper thin walls and open to the outside, making for a very high noise level. It is a very old property and is way overdue for a complete renovation. Better yet, it should be torn down. They cater to large tour bus groups. The parking lot is very small, and when you get two or three buses parked in the lot, there is no room left for guests to park. You have to park your car in a nearby shopping center. We worried about our car all night. The only place where these large tour bus groups can assemble is in the breakfast cabin. They linger in the breakfast cabin for hours, making it impossible for families to eat breakfast. Also, there are many complaints about housekeeping ignoring Do Not Disturb signs in the morning. They start banging on guest doors at 7:00 a.m. We had to scream at them to go away and even then they starting opening the door with a pass key. The owner is very rude and is only concerned with keeping the tour bus groups happy. Avoid this place. The carpet in our room was so filthy that we kept our shoes on. The bed mattresses were hard and lumpy.

Also, do not stay at Edge Park which is on River Road. A friend told me that they were really cheap and they are at that but the rooms are old and musky smelling. The air conditioner just barely hangs in the window. The paneling under the air conditioner was wet and coming off the wall. The ceiling in the bathroom had mold all over it. I always ask to see a room first before I agree to it and when I walked in and saw this room I told the desk clerk in a nice way that we wanted to find something a little bigger. Also, there were these guys out in the parking lot that had the hood up on their car and they were under the car doing something and oil was running all over the lot. The management was in the office and I know they saw them. It was not a place that 2 women by themselves would want to stay.

I know that Best Western Zoders Inn all rooms come with fridge and some with fireplaces however no microwaves that I know of.

    longdog: Read your responses.

This reminds of a short story a person told me years ago: '; A guy buys a $1000 suit and only has enough money for a $40 pair of shoes, so he takes long steps to save the shoes and rips the crouch out of his $1000 suit.

    longdog,

I just posted a review for Carrs Northside cottages #8 in the hotels section including photos. A little farther to the main parkway, but a great value.

Nashville is head and shoulders above Memphis !

There%26#39;s a lot of negatives about Memphis no doubt....but sometimes folks resist honest feedback of ';what%26#39;s hot, and what%26#39;s not'; (TripAdvisor%26#39;s language, not mine !)

I think the food at the Rendezvous is reprehensible.....I wouldn%26#39;t advise a visitor or TripAdvisor reader to waste their time or money.....the greasy sausage appetizer platter was, well...greasy....the lamb portions tasted exceptionall dry and overcooked...simply a sin to mess up food that way...served by indifferent waitstaff....

The Peabody Hotel is a has-been, over-priced, downtown Hotel......watching the ';ducks'; stroll around the lobby may be fine for a three-year old, but otherwise simply PASS...Our experiences with the food at the Peobody are very medicore to awful..and very expensive..

Our experiences with MATA is mixed....it%26#39;s generally full of folks who don%26#39;t travel any other way...plus the transportation is hot and smelley...

We%26#39;ve had the Dyer%26#39;s hamburgers...they cook the darn things in a VAT of GREASE which NEVER gets changed. (that%26#39;s a fact and they brag about that...imagine that!! ).....it%26#39;s truly a ';fat burger'; or ';grease burger';....

Downtown has too many pan-handlers for our own concern for safety....we have seen them begging right in the presence of Policemen who were just standing around shoting the breeze with fellow officers......One of our friends just got their purse snatched on Beale on last Thursday night....again Police were right there in the vicinity (close)....Any thinking person can access crime records (arrests too) in Memphis, by zip code.....I have felt very unsafe in Memphis at times.....that%26#39;s my experience......let%26#39;s see if this honest, direct';post'; gets erased by TripAdvisor TOO.......which will show an obvious bias in willynilly censorship.....strange stuff....

    ENJOY !

Nashville is head and shoulders above Memphis !

I live in Nashville (moved here 4 years ago) and wouldn%26#39;t live in Memphis if someone gave me a million dollars. It is awful, most city schools are below state and federal standards. In the last few years it had a higher crime and murder ranking than NYC. That should tell you something!

Nashville is head and shoulders above Memphis !

My husband has a weekend job in Memphis, but we live an hour away. There is now way we%26#39;d move there. Among the other problems you have listed, the city government is screwed up too. For those reasons we will be moving to Nashville the day after my graduation in December. Can%26#39;t wait to get there!!!!!

Lived in Memphis for 16 years, and have now lived in Middle Tn for 8. There is absolutely no comparison- I wouldn%26#39;t move back to Memphis for anything! Obviously other former Memphians feel the same way, b/c when my wife and I drive back for the holidays, all you see is Davidson/Rutherfored/Williamson Co. tags on the cars going west on I-40.

As we say in East Tennessee--Memphis is the biggest city in Mississipi.

Why anyone other than an Elvis fan would ever go to Memphis is beyond mt comprehension.

To each his own. I like Memphis. To say only an Elvis fan could live here seems a little off the mark. I guess I could say only a country music fan could live in Nashville but that would be an uneducated idiotic thing to say.

I%26#39;m sure all of the International Paper executives who just made the decision to relocate their headquarters to memphis from Connecticut are all Elvis fans. I%26#39;m sure Elvis is the reason they are only the sixth company in the last 30 years to relocate a corporate headquarters located outside of the South into a Southern city.

Correct me if I%26#39;m wrong, but Memphis is now the corporate HQ of three Fortune 500 companies, with IP being a Fortune 100 company. The Metro Nashville area has two, Chattanooga one and the Tri Cities one.

    That%26#39;s a lot of Memphis Elvis-loving execs.

I don%26#39;t feel unsafe in the city, maybe because I use common sense and don%26#39;t go into areas that are full of crime. When visitors come here I%26#39;m sure they head straight for Orange Mound just like visitors head straight to South Central LA. It%26#39;s called common sense.

I like Middle and East Tennessee. never had a problem with them. Just thought I should say something positive about Memphis so as not to scare off all the tourists who enjoy coming to our city to see sites such as Beale Street, which continues to be the most visited tourist destination in the state each year.

I would just like to say that I am a born and raised Memphian. I am very proud to be from Memphis despite whatever problems it may have. There is not city in the world that is free from crime or that doesn%26#39;t have it%26#39;s bad points. There are plenty of good things about Memphis in addition to Elvis Presley and Beale St. There are a lot of hard working wonderful people in Memphis and I don%26#39;t think that everyone or everything in Memphis should get a bad rap just because of a few bad experiences that can happen anywhere.

Hey! After reading these posts I had to sign up here so I could respond!

Anyone that says watching the %26#39;ducks%26#39; stroll around the Peabldy Lobby is fine for a 3 year old must be really jaded somewhere along the line. Everyone should see that once in their lives regardless of age.

I%26#39;ve been on Beale street several times. I%26#39;ve only ever had a great time. Never felt afraid. I was never pan handled. I was no doubt accidently places I shouldn%26#39;t have been too. I%26#39;ve had wonderful food, wonderful music, fun shopping.

I%26#39;ve lived in California from SF to LA. Visited and worked in NYC. Currently I%26#39;m in St. Louis. Memphis is %26#39;A%26#39; okay in my book and one of my favorite get-a-ways.

I like Nashville quite a lot too, but honestly I%26#39;ve had the better times in Memphis.

Nashville is a little pretentious for what it is, I%26#39;ve even heard people saying they live in the ';third/middle'; coast in Nashville.

It%26#39;s Nashville for crying out loud, not San Francisco.

If you love the Blues, try Memphis....or St. Louis!

I was back in Memphis for a few days....I was reading a BIG ariticle in the ';local rag'; called the Commercial Appeal...even the local paper slams the city of Memphis...lol.......the article was criticizing the stupid planning, or lack of it in a suburb called ';Cordova';....and the rather tacky parkway called Germantown Parkway....the local paper predicted that Cordova and the parkway woul become ';another Winchester Road'; ( a SE located located in Memphis, which got run down by urban creep, and god-awful planning).........Clearly the paper has a point...poor planning is not the sole domain of the City of Memphis, since most of the clusterfrig planning was authorized by the Shelby County Commission !.....funny stuff......

The planning...i.e. egress/ingress is BAD.......one store, Kmart is already closing and others are slated to follow...(although Kmart has its own problems, but this decision was exacerbated by this ';location';......

On the front page of this Sunday%26#39;s past paper, the paper highlighted the fact of breaking a record in ';murders';, and other crimes in Memphis too.....

At least the local paper is NOT blind to some REAL facts, even though some of the citizenry is...

    DUMB stuff..

    ENJOY!

    By the way:

International Paper%26#39;s corporate headquaters is NOT Memphis, TN.......that%26#39;s patently wrong......it%26#39;s in the State of New York.

The center in Memphis is an operatonal center.....Believe me, the CEO and the COO/Pres, or the CFO do NOT reside and send their kids to school in Memphis, TN.

    Thanksgiving

My family (grandmother-63, mother-42, brother-21, and myself-15) are trying to find somewhere to go on Thanksgiving, and are thinking about Gatlinburg. Though we all live in Knoxville, we%26#39;ve never really spent much time in the city itself, and have just visited the mountains once or twice. We were wondering what we could do that would be fun. We all have different tastes, but none of us really want to see arts and crafts, or listen to country music. My brother doesn%26#39;t really like country living, so more modern themed suggestions would be nice (no horse rides or anything. Thanks a lot if you can help us enjoy our first Thanksgiving since my father passed away. Any and all suggestions will be very appreciated.

    Thanksgiving

I would recommend a trolley ride to see all the Christmas lights and a visit to the Ripley%26#39;s Aquarium. There are also shows such as Sweet Fanny Adams and Dixie Stampede that all might enjoy. I don%26#39;t think anyone would have problems finding something they liked to do. We always enjoy a ride on the sky lift where you can see the beauty of the mountains and of Gatlinburg.

    Avoid Best Western Greenbrier Inn

Our family just returned from Pigeon Forge. Do NOT stay at the Best Western Greenbrier Inn, 711 Parkway. In all the years we%26#39;ve been going to PF, this was the single worst motel experience we ever had. It is one of the oldest motels in the area, about 30 yrs old. All doors open to the outside, and the motel is very close to the parkway. This makes for a very high noise level in the rooms. Housekeeping ignores Do Not Disturb signs and begins banging on all doors at 7:00 a.m. We were still in bed, and the maid started opening the door, even with us screaming at her to go away. The motel owner was not concerned about this and believed we were making a big fuss about nothing. Right behind me walked in two more guests with the same complaint and still, the owner thought it was no big deal. This place books several large tour bus groups, and the buses block so many parking spots that individual guests are forced to park in a shopping center. We worried about our car all night. Then, in the morning, there is no place for the tour groups to asseble, so they use the breakfast room. They occupy tables, talk, drink coffee and refuse to give up tables for families and others who want to eat breakfast. Again, the rude owner told us to get a tray and take food back to our room. What food? There was none left. This motel advertises high-speed internet, but it is only available on the third floor, and you are never told this when you book a room. The air conditioning units are very old and very noisy. Your bill and registration are done the old fashioned way, with handwritten bills and registration cards, which slows everything to a crawl at busy times. This motel has multiple problems, and the owner could care less. This is NOT a family friendly motel. In fact, it is a terrible place for anyone to stay. Avoid this place. Learn from our experience.

    Avoid Best Western Greenbrier Inn

We booked this hotel last Thanksgiving and I agree the noise from the traffic and the heating unit are unreal. We went out to eat after checking in and relocated to the Fairfield Inn across from Five Oaks.

    Avoid Best Western Greenbrier Inn

I%26#39;m sorry for your bad experience. Nothing ruins a vacation faster than a bad motel; I%26#39;ve stayed at my share in the past, so I know. (Our last trip to St. Louis, we got a room that smelled like a wet dog the entire stay.)

Might I suggest on your next trip to Pigeon Forge that you try the Rodeway Inn up near the south end of the Parkway, just before you leave town heading toward Gatlinburg. This is a very family-friendly, clean, well-kept motel which gives each member of your party a coupon for a free hot pancake breakfast each morning of your visit in the on-site restaurant. They offer very good prices during ';off-season'; times, as low as $24.99, and each room has a mini-fridge and coffee maker with furnished coffee.

This motel has several different room ';types'; to choose from with one or two queen beds. There are smoking/non-smoking, ground floor, handicapped, and other room selections. The entire motel has only two floors, so even if you get a top-floor room, there are ramps you may use to haul your stuff up without needing stairs. Of course, you can use stairs if you like.

Maid service has never been a problem here either during off-season stays. We are typical early risers, but sometimes don%26#39;t get away from the room until after 9:00 AM. Maids don%26#39;t even start around until after 10:00 or so.

We%26#39;ve stayed here at least six or seven trips to the area and I%26#39;ve never had one complaint. The motel is not too close to the road, so road noise isn%26#39;t that bad, and if you get a ';back side'; room, there%26#39;s no noise at all.

Hope this was helpful and that your next trip to the Smokies will be much more pleasant.

    Thanks!!

    Thanks lovegb!

Where in WV did you say you were from?

In my personal opinion the Blue Ridge Parkway is much more breathtaking than the Smokies. It also tends to be much less crowded most of the year.

How far away is the Blue Ridge Parkway from Gatlinburg?

I am from the Charleston area.

I agree with Coastermeister, The Blue Ridge Parkway is a prettier drive.

My family is from around Jane Lew, WV.

We will have to rent a car because we would like to fly to TN.

The Smokies and Blue Ridge are both gorgeous but in different ways. You can see them both if you are staying in Gatlinburg. Take US Route 411 through the Great Smoky Mtn. National Park then go left onto the Blue Ridge Parkway right before you enter the town of Cherokee NC.

    Thanks!

How far is Grandfater Mountain from Gatlinburg? or Biltmore estates?

I think Gatlinburg sounds nice and it is close to other nice places.

Grandfather Mountain is quite a ways up the Parkway. The Parkway is a curvy slow drive and you won%26#39;t make good time on it. May want to spend the night in Asheville if you go that far.

Is it worth it to spend a night in Ashville?

  • Signature Inn Knoxville

Hi Everyone....wondering if any of you can tell me about the Signature Inn Knoxville.

Hubby and I will be traveling to Knoxville with our small dog, over the Christmas Holidays. We were looking for a place to stay that would allow pets, and also have a refrigerator etc. This hotel seems to have the amenities we%26#39;d like, but

woudl appreciate hearing about it from anyone who might know what it%26#39;s like.

    Thanks so much

    Signature Inn Knoxville

MsMuir, I did a little checking on the Web and there is no Signature Inn in Knoxville. I think you must be booked into the Jameson Inn, which is their sister hotel chain. The two chains share a Web site.

The Jameson Inn in Knoxville is located off the Cedar Bluff exit, which is near plenty of shopping and restaurants. My in-laws live less than half a mile from there.

I%26#39;ve never stayed in that hotel but the location is a good one. The three reviews for it are all favorable. So I think you%26#39;ll be fine.

    Signature Inn Knoxville

Hi Peachy....Thanks for clearing that up. However I did find a listing, on this form, as a matter of fact, for the hotel. and when I went to the page it shows up as

    Signature Inn Knoxville

209 Marketplace Lane, Knoxville, Tennessee 37922

I checked further and found that it is the same as Jameson Inn in Knoxville.

    Thanks again

Yes, it%26#39;s probable that they haven%26#39;t changed it on this site yet from Signature to Jameson. That happens sometimes when they haven%26#39;t updated a hotel name change/listing. Sometimes it takes a little time to catch up.

Hope you have a grand time in Knoxville!

Hey, Knap! How%26#39;s it going? I see you made the move to Knoxville. I hope you%26#39;re settling in and enjoying life there.

If you have any lingering questions, I might be able to help. I was just up visiting the in-laws this past weekend and will be coming up again for Thanksgiving. So feel free to ask any questions.

    Hey Peachy!

I moved just north of Powell. Loving it! Thanks for asking...

For all of you Gatlinburg lovers, what is the must dos for us to enjoy. We are so excited about the trip!

You will want to ride the trolley. See info below.

    Wednesday, Nov 2 2005 - Gatlinburg

Hop Aboard Trolley Ride of Lights

The best way to view the more than 35 lighting displays and numerous other lights featured in Gatlinburg’s Winterfest is to hop aboard the Winterfest Trolley Ride of Lights and take a leisurely ride through the city. Trolleys depart from the Gatlinburg Aquarium Welcome Center at Traffic Light No. 5 (Mass Transit Center) at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 p.m. nightly from November through December excluding Dec. 2 and 25, then on Saturday nights during January. The Trolley Ride of Lights is a guided narrative tour that lasts approximately 45 minutes. This year tickets are only $4 and advance reservations can be made at the Aquarium Welcome Center or by calling 865/436-0535. Group reservations are also welcomed.

Among the charming displays of Gatlinburg’s Winterfest Celebration are an animated trolley, a winking welcome bear, dancing bears, toy soldiers, hot air balloons and several craftsmen at work. But that’s not all; the rest is a secret until you embark on the Winterfest Trolley Ride of Lights! To add to the façade, a “Smoky Mountain Romance” theme featuring symbols of love are incorporated in lighting displays throughout February.

Gatlinburg Winterfest has been recognized as a Top Twenty Event in the South by the Southeast Tourism Society several times and twice by the American Bus Association as a Top 100 Event in North America.

To learn more about this illuminating event, call 800/568-4748 or visit the Gatlinburg website at www.gatlinburg.com

You might want to try eating at the Greenbriar restaraunt. They are out of the bustle of Gatlinburg and have a nice wooded setting. Another unique Gatlinburg establishment is the Smoky Mountain Trout House, it take awhile for them to prepare your dinner but is well worth the wait!

    bump

I would consider Dollywood for the lights too. It is one of the most awesome lighting displays I have ever seen! Very beautiful!

The Old Mill is wonderful food as well as the Apple barn. If you are trying to just get away and relax, don%26#39;t forget to enjoy where you are staying and each other, as a mom of 4(yikes) that is really important.

I just made our plane reservations today for Jan for GB

    Can%26#39;t wait!

Thanks everybody. Keep the ideas coming!

Take a couple hours and drive into the park for a hike. Pack a fleece blanket, some hot cocoa (or whatever you prefer to warm up with) and some snacks. Have someone take a photo of you both at Newfound Gap (lots of people park their cars there to enjoy the spectacular view).

I love the Park Grill for dinner, but Cherokee Grill is very nice too. A little more upscale, mountain-themed atmosphere, moderate price, very good meals. Ask to sit by the fireplace at night.

Walk the streets of Gatlinburg together after dinner (you%26#39;ll need to ;-) The lights are beautiful and it just feels good to be outdoors. Lots of fun shops too.

Visit the Smoky Mtn. Winery where you can taste before you buy ;-) Bring back a bottle or two of regional wines, get some cheese, crackers and fruit and you%26#39;re set for a romantic night back at the cabin or hotel.

Ride the sky lift chairs (in the middle of Gatlinburg) to see the city and take photos. It%26#39;s about $10/person but if you%26#39;re first timers, well worth it. The ride is fun, the view is beautiful. By day you can see so much more, but at night the twinkling lights and Space Needle are gorgeous.

Hope this gives you some ideas. All personally tested by myself :)

Here are some of my recommendations for Gatlinburg:

Regular posters may be tired of this but hopefully it will be beneficial for someone new to Gatlinburg.

I highly recommend Bearskin on the River and Zoders. They are on opposite ends of town, but are both close enough to walk. I think Zoders ';regular'; rooms are around $100 peak season, but their nicer rooms are in the 120-160 range. We stayed in their ';Dream Villa'; which was very nice. The motels listed below are most likely a little more affordable. It just depends on the price range you want.

Go to www.gatlinburg.com and have them mail you a visitors pkt, it will have a convenient map and trolly route.

These motels are within walking distance to the Parkway and are probably less than the Bearskin %26amp; Zoders.

*The Gillette motel, up from Lite #8 is a reasonable, clean, no frills motel, short walk to the parkway. I stayed there many times.

*The Mountain House, (formally Econo Lodge) on Baskins Creek Rd at Lite #6 seems to be pretty nice, I looked at one of their rooms a few weeks ago. Walk to the parkway also. I tried to get reservations there in Oct with no luck, maybe your dates will work.

*I just came back from GB and we stayed at Johnsons Inn, in the same area as the Mountain House. My first time there,it is not fancy, but clean and VERY convenient to the Parkway

*Marshall%26#39;s Creek Side is also up Baskins Creek, $40-50 range, small rooms but very clean. They are almost always booked with regular returning guests.

*We have stayed at Carrs Northside Motel/Cottages in Cottage #8, it is up the East Parkway, so it is a good hike to main part of town but not out of the question, the walk to town is not bad but you may want to catch the trolly for the trip back (uphill). The cottage was $98, King, large jacuzzi, fireplace, full kit, very nice for the price.

*The Mountain Heritage Inn, has some nice rooms in their newer building on River Rd. I think about $99, King, jacuzzi, fireplace.

*I have stayed at a few cabins, the only one I would highly recommend is “Schonblick” at www.mtnlaurelchalets.com It is an upscale, quality, romantic cabin up Ski Mtn Rd. just a few miles to town. Nice view of the City Lights., soaking tub, hot tub, nice ceramic shower for 2, 1 br king, gas fireplace. Very nice. It was $150 nite a few years ago.

    Restaurant recommendatons:

*Pancake Pantry, middle of town.... do not miss it.

*Log Cabin Pancake House on Airport Rd.... good but a distance 2nd place to the Pancake Pantry in my opinion.

*Lunch at Hofenbraus Restaurant in The Village shopping center(next to the Pancake Pantry) for the best Reuben sandwich you will ever eat.

*Lunch at the Pancake Pantry is also good.

*Lunch at Desserts and More in The Village, soup and Sandwiches, try the Almond Joy Pie.

*Lunch at the Mountain Edge Grill in Baskins Square, (across from the Pancake Pantry) try their White Chicken Chili, good hamburgers too.

*Lunch/Dinner at Fuddruckers, Pigeon Forge, Governors Crossing. Great hamburgers.

*Dinner at Calhouns on the Parkway, excellent grilled shrimp

*Dinner at Cherokee Grill next to Calhouns

*Dinner at Rocky River Grill, Pigeon Forge, Governors Crossing, also excellent grilled shrimp.

*Dinner at The Best Itialian Restaurant (thats the name) Located in Elks Plaza on the west end of the GB Parkway…Excellent. Try the Garlic Rolls.

*Dinner/Lunch at The Brass Lantern on the Parkway ,tureen of Vegetable soup and cornbread is excellent and enough for 2. Cheap dinner.

    Have Fun!

    lovegb:

This is EXACTLY the info I was looking for. Thanks!

BTW, we did a day trip to the area last weekend. I told my husband that we should eat at this great pancake place. Then we got there. I didn%26#39;t realize that one in three restaurants has the word ';pancake'; in their name!

    I%26#39;ll try to remember ';Pancake PANTRY!';

    Great info! Thanks a bunch!!

The Mountain House the previous poster mentioned is a nice motel. We stayed there a couple years ago. We got the jacuzzi suite, with king bed. The jacuzzi was nice, big enough for my 6%26#39;3'; husband to lay down in. Also had a gas fireplace. It was close enough to walk to the Village without much effort. The people there were very nice as well.

Pancake Pantry, mmmmm. My favorite. The Old Mill restaurant too, is great! There are lots of ducks and pigeons there if you want to bring crackers or something. My 3 yr old thought it was great.

Try driving Roaring Fork. It is one of the nicest drives through nature I think.

    Hope you have fun!

We're back from our anniversary weekend

Well, we got back tonight from our much anticipated anniversary celebration and it was wonderful!

We stayed at Gracehill B%26amp;B in Townsend. We just wanted to go a little nicer for a special celebration of 25 years of marriage and it was truly that! Kathy, the B%26amp;B host, was great! She is very personable (sp)and so nice! We took a route through the park to get to Gatlinburg from the B%26amp;B and it was great! There was almost no traffic at all. On the way to the B%26amp;B the first time, we saw a lot of cars parked on the side of the road. When we got to them, we saw what was going on. There was a black bear up on the ridge. My first thought was of one of you that had said you saw deer, but no bears. Adn that is what you had hoped to see. Here we were just driving down the road and there was a bear! And we hadn%26#39;t even given any thought to seeing any!

Friday night, we went to the Foothills Milling Company for dinner. IT WAS FABULOUS!!! Someone asked about it. GO!! We had pecan encrusted green tomatoes. If you like fried green tomatoes or if you think it sounds good at all, GET THEM!!! If I had known how good they would be, we would have each gottne out own plate (6) of them and skipped our salads. That%26#39;s how good I thought they were. We had the flat irn steaks and they were excellent. Some other guest that stayed at the B%26amp;B Saturday said they had the salmon and it was the best they had ever had. The service was as we had heard. Nearly flawless. It was a slow start, but once the appetizers came, the servers never missed a beat. If you want wine with your dinner, take your own. It is dry where the restaurant is.

We went to the Aquariun Saturday. It was nice, but I know my husband enjoyed it more than I did... Fish jsut aren%26#39;t my thing. But I did like the coral room a lot. We mostly just strolled around after that. I liked the Village the best. I liked the old world atmosphere in there. Saturday night, we ate at a place called the Trout House. My husband had gone there with his grandmother several times years ago when it first opened and it was jsut nostalgic for him. It was a nice meal. We walked around looking at the lights after supper. My favorite was back in the Village. It was a small atmosphere and had the trees strung with lights nad the shop windows with lights and wreaths and garland. It was truly lovely. We went to the Donut Frier on someone%26#39;s (from this forum)suggestion. I had a pastry since I swore off doughnuts about 4 years ago. It was good. But the best was the hot chocolate! Best I%26#39;ve ever had by far!! I had two hot chocolates Saturday! I never had the chance to get anything at the Desserts %26amp; More because of timing and time frame. My husband promised me we%26#39;d come back again and go there. After all, we are only 2 hours away. It%26#39;s jsut that the traffic keeps us away... and I wanted to go to Davy Crockett miniature golf, but didnt%26#39; get to do that either. That%26#39;s mostly due to the one bad moment of our weekend. Leave it to me... I hit a dip in the sidewalk while looking across the street at something and stumbled and fell. Oh, the embarrassment! I fell flat onto my stomach, but partially broke the fall with my hands. I messed up the palm of my left hand, but kept my knees and face from making any contact on the cement. I%26#39;m very sore in the left shoulder and the muscles in my stomach are sore tonight. All I could think as I was falling was, %26#39;Why doesn%26#39;t Ken (my husband) catch me?%26#39; And, %26#39;I%26#39;m going to rip my brand new jacket!%26#39; Well the jacket is mostly OK. I think there is the tinyest hole, but maybe it will be OK. Mostly, it is my pride that was stomped on! It gave my husband the opportunity (later on) to say his patented, %26#39;Can%26#39;t take you anywhere!%26#39; Creep! LOL! So anyway, if any of you was ther Staurday night and was a large 50 year old in a pretty pink jacket belly flop on the pavement, it was me!...

Today, we just strolled around a little while I took pictures of the places we had been to 25 years ago on our honeymoon. I have to say this, though... We ate at the Pancake Pantry Sunday afternoon. Why does everyone love it so much? Come to my house. I%26#39;ll show you what good pancakes are! Truly, they were OK, but the bacon was the best part of the meal... OK! I%26#39;m ready for the backlash!! Bring it on! Ha!

So anyway, except for my %26#39;fifteen seconds of embarrassing fame%26#39; the weekend was great and I am sad it%26#39;s over. But as I said earlier, we live close by, so I will make my husband take me back sooner next time!

Sorry for any mistakes. The post is just too long for me to spellcheck!

We're back from our anniversary weekend

Sorry I missed the show, but I%26#39;m glad you%26#39;re ok! I hate when that kind of stuff happens. I keep watching America%26#39;s Funniest Home Videos to see if I show up on it!

Nice summary and congratulations on 25 years. That%26#39;s terrific!

BTW, can you really take your own wine into the Foothills Milling Company?

We're back from our anniversary weekend

klm, realy glad you enjoyed your trip, except for the road rash incident! We are headed down a week from today.

We too enjoy The Village. The Donut Friar does have good hot chocolate, their lattes are pretty good too.

I have just recently heard of the Foothills Mining Co. restaruant, sounds nice but also heard it is expensive.

I think everyone knows my biased opinion on the Pancake Pantry and I am suprised anytime someone does not enjoy it as much as I do. I just have one thing to say...if you truly can make better pancakes than the Pantry...you should open a restaurant because you would be a sure success! I would be your first customer !

Anyway, glad you enjoyed your trip.

KLM, thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like your anniversary was almost perfect ;-) Hey, I%26#39;ve taken a header too...and I%26#39;m sure a lot more folks have as well. I%26#39;m just glad to hear that you didn%26#39;t require any medical attention.

Thanks for the review of the Foothills Milling Co. I%26#39;d like to take my husband there in the spring when we celebrate our 24th. Sounds perfect, even if it is BYOB.

(They really do allow you to bring your own wine?)

I%26#39;ll be going down to decorate and work on the cabins next week and you%26#39;ve got me all geeked now, even though I won%26#39;t get to do much sightseeing. I must be weird or something because I get a thrill just painting or cleaning or putting new DVDs in the movie collection. Just bought Disney%26#39;s Madagascar last week and I%26#39;ll probably pick up War of the Worlds this week. It%26#39;s always nice to offer new releases to guests...most don%26#39;t expect them.

I love the Village too and will definitely try the hot chocolate...yum. I agree that Pancake Pantry is more atmosphere with it%26#39;s beautiful woodwork and windows, than pancake perfection. Good but not enough that it%26#39;s on my gotta-go list each visit ;-)

Klm, I%26#39;m so glad to hear that you had a great time (most of it anyway!). I could just imagine strolling through Gatlinburg with my hubby enjoying the beautiful lights! Maybe by the time we%26#39;re married 25 years, we can do that without any kids. By the way, I agree about the Pancake Pantry....we went in August for the first time. It was good, but I guess maybe I was expecting more than that. Anyway, congratulations on 25 years %26amp; hopefully you%26#39;ll be back there in 25 more!

Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone. It was, indeed, a lovely time with no kids!

Road rash... That%26#39;s a good one! Luckily, I got out of that one with no rash! Ha!

Yes, yoyu can take your own wine. Their website encourages you to since they cannot sell it. That is the way it works in our town, too. Dry counties cannot sell it, but they can serve what you bring yourself. The meal was on the expensive side. It%26#39;s not a restaurant I would go to any ole time. but definitely one that I would go to for very special occasions. Our meal included the appetizer I described, two house salads, two flat iron steak entries, and one dessert. We did not order anything to drink since we had our wine. The meal with tax was $83.00 plus change. For a special meal like we had with the atmosphere and service the restaurant had, I was surprised with the total bill for our meal. We have paid more for less in the past. I just plan ahead, knowing what I want to do, and save for it. That%26#39;s how it becomes affordable for us...

Thanks for the review of your trip. Was wondering if you could tell me where the Foothills Milling Company is located.

Don%26#39;t feel too bad about the fall, a woman fell in front of my husband and I crossing the street at Ripley%26#39;s museum a few years back and my husband helped her up. Plus my mom slipped and fell on the sidewalk one year when she was up there, it was in the winter and there was a drippy outdoor faucet attached to a building. She smacked her head pretty good and was lucky not to have a concussion. Said it was the only patch of ice on the whole street and she had to find it.

Foothills Miling Company is on 321 in the Wears Valley area. I can%26#39;t tell you how many miles from Pigeon Forge it is because we did not get there from Pigeon Forge. All I can tell you is that it is on the right as you are coming up from Pigeon Forge and it is two big red barn-like looking buildings connected together by a passageway. It is two miles short of the Blount County line.

Maybe someone else can tel you how many miles up on 321 it is using those facts...

And your mother has a kindred spirit. I can find the only problem in a particular area, too. It never fails!
