Moving to Knoxville

We live in Hercules, CA 20 miles away from San Francisco, CA and are thinking about moving to the Knoxville area.

Cost of living in the Bay Area keeps going up every year, traffic is pretty bad, and public schools are not that great anymore, commuting to the city takes about 1 1/2 hours each way and toll for bridges are currently $3 each way. Gas prices as of today (11/6/05) is $2.69

The only good thing about living here is the weather, plenty of outdoor activities, excellent food and cultural museums and activities. However everything else is very expensive.

We have a small publishing company, and work from home, we can conduct our business from anywhere in the country, since we only talk to our customers on the phone, and we sell via the internet and catalogs.

We DON%26#39;T HAVE TO COMMUTE to downtown, or be near big cities, our main concern is good schools, we have a 2yr-old daughter.

We%26#39;re looking for a house in the $150-$250K range.

How%26#39;s the weather like in Knoxville?, what are the best places to live? how about schools and outdoor activities?

Moving to Knoxville

JR, you might want to do a search on just the Knoxville posts from the last few months. You can do that by clicking on the ';select forum'; button to search for the city. Several people have been asking the very same questions you have lately and you can get a lot of information from those posts.

You might also go over to Fodors.com to their message boards and do a search for Knoxville. Even more information can be found there.

Briefly, Knoxville weather is pretty mild. Not much snow or ice. Summers can get hot and humid. The fall is amazing in terms of fall color in the nearby mountains.

I personally think the west side of Knoxville has more to offer in terms of housing (lots of new construction) and schools. The Farragut area is pretty good. You might also check out Oakridge and Maryville in addition to just Knoxville proper.

As for outdoor activities, hiking, fishing and boating are very popular. Do be aware that Univ. of Tennessee football draws enormous crowds during the fall.

But to be honest, a trip to Knoxville to see it all for yourself is the best thing to do. My husband is from there and I always enjoy visiting my in-laws. It%26#39;s a great place.

The Knoxville area is one of the best

places to raise a child. My wife and I are both from here but met while living in Atlanta. We were fortunate to move back here before we had our daughter. The Maryville/Alcoa school systems in

Blount county are excellant as are the west knox schools. Housing is reasonable especially compared to San Fran. Come visit knoxville in the spring or fall and you will never want to leave.
