Cades Cove Rd closures 11/29-11/30

I got this from this mornings issue of the Knoxville News Sentinal:

The 11-mile Loop Road around Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be closed Nov. 29 and partially closed Nov. 30 for forestry technicians to treat hemlock trees.

On Nov. 29, the road will be closed to all vehicular traffic - including bicycles - but open to hikers.

On Nov. 30, only the western end of the Loop Road will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Visitors will be detoured at Hyatt Lane (the second crossroad) and directed across the valley to exit Cades Cove. The detour will shorten the tour of Cades Cove to eight miles.

The Hyatt Lane bypass will eliminate access to the Cades Cove Visitors Center and the Cable Mill area, as well as the following trailheads: Abrams Falls, Cooper Road, Rabbit Creek, Wet Bottom Trails and the Gregory Ridge trailhead.

During the closures, forestry technicians will treat hemlock trees around Cades Cove with an insecticidal soap/oil solution using large truck-mounted sprayers. The sprays are designed to kill the hemlock woolly adelgid, a tiny insect from Asia that has spread through the park and is killing hemlock trees.
